Excavations in the central area of the roman fort at Băneasa (Teleorman County)
During the last two archaeological campaigns (2021-2022) we worked in the central area of the large fort at Băneasa. As we expected, the trenches have intersected the defensive ditch of the second phase of the fort (it shrank at less than half of the original surface), and the new gate of the eastern precinct. The two phases are similar in many respects, as the shape and the size of the ditch, the almost flat rampart, the undersized palisade, as …
A Teutonic stronghold in the Carpathian Mountains
The HiLands Project (2018-2022) brought the opportunity to investigate several main communication corridors within the Curvature Carpathians. At the northern end of Rucăr-Bran Pass we had a great surprise, finding in the woods three strongholds, just one kilometre west of Bran Castle. Several trips on the mountain and two short digging sessions uncovered two hillforts made by the Teutonic Order, and a third one, shortly after they left. Hidden in…
Multi-analytical study of the archaeological leather discovered near the medieval Oratea fortress
Recent archaeological excavations made on the plateau located east of the medieval fortress at Oratea (Podu Dâmboviţei, Argeş County) evidenced a fortified position of the Roman Age. Among other finds there is a relatively large leather fragment, belonging to the earliest phase (beginning of the second century AD). This discovery is extremely rare since suitable preservation conditions for leather are rarely meet in the specific soil and climate …
Roman frontier crossing Mocanului Valley
Several years ago, within Limes Transalutanus Project (2014-2017), we dealt with several segments of the Roman limes in Teleorman County. Briefly, that meant aerial and terrestrial survey, geologic sampling and geophysics, in most of the cases. The old renditions of the frontier line, as being a rampart without a ditch, were intriguing and unusual, thus they had to be checked in the field, including by test digging. One spot chosen for a complex …
A new roman post on Limes Transalutanus at Oratea
The departure point was the observation that the frontier road is stretched, distances between two Roman forts being greater than normal; the worst is the case Jidova to Drumul Carului, a 40 km travel over a very difficult terrain. As an intermediary station was compulsive, the first try was the eastern plateau from Oratea (a medieval citadel), for which older hunches were known, as a rampart at the edge of the precipice, seen by Grigore Tocilesc…
Digging the frontier, tackling the epidemics. Researches on Bran Pass
The area next to the village Fundata, the former frontier between the Romanian Kingdom and Austria-Hungary, is located on the Rucăr-Bran corridor, between Piatra Craiului and Bucegi Mountains. Due to the configuration of the terrain, it was a good place to try an archaeological excavation in quest for the Roman road of Limes Transalutanus . Looking at the LiDAR based terrain-model I found yet the ruins of an unknown frontier checkpoint from moder…
Unhiding Forested Landscapes. The Archaeological Index of South-Eastern Carpathians
Starting with late 2018, a new archaeological research project has been unfolding in the framework funded by the Romanian Governmental Unit for Research and Development (UEFISCDI) dedicated to top fundamental research, as one of the few winners of 2016 edition (the single to date) of ‘Complex Projects for Frontier Research’ competition. The Project, whose aims and methods will be shortly presented further, is entitled ‘Hidden Landscapes: Explorat…
A Small Aurei Deposit Found in Răcari Fort
Four gold coins were found during the 2008 excavations in the Roman fort at Răcari (Oltenia), in latus dextrum, allegedly used as praetorium. As they were minted in the time of Vespasian, the fact could cast doubts for the chronology of the first phase of the fort, as stated before. The paper is resuming the basics known about the phases of the fortification and their date, giving some details about the conditions of the discovery. The coins thems…
Excavations at the Eastern Gate of the Băneasa Roman fort
Within the short archaeological campaigns from 2018 and 2019 we have excavated at the middle of the eastern side of the large fort from Băneasa (Teleorman County), facing the frontier’s palisade. It has been discovered one of the gates (first to be studied) of an unusual type: there is only one tower, made of wood, almost twice longer than wide, used as an entrance way, 2.4 m in width. The gate itself was made of a grid of horizontal and vertical…
Gheorghe Popilian and the Roman Pottery From Oltenia
Gheorghe Popilian’s monograph Ceramica romană din Oltenia is the main reference textbook for southern Romania, at least. The work is now pretty old – more than four decades – and although still very useful, it is obviously the product of its age. For instance, the information connected to fabrication, constantly retrieved in general commentaries or in catalogue’s descriptions, is rather sketchy (‘fine’ or ‘coarse’). More than that, the relationsh…
Roman Age pottery at the fort Băneasa, collected in 2017 archaeological campaign
The authors are testing here an older impression, that the Roman pottery from western and eastern sides of the Olt River (Alutus) is not exactly the same. In order to accomplish a comparison, they are using two sets of data: the normalised data offered by the old monograph of the Roman pottery from Oltenia (Popilian 1976) and the ceramic inventory from the digging campaign at the Roman fort from Băneasa (Teleorman county, 20 km east of Olt River)…
A 'new' Roman Temporary Camp in Parâng Mountains
A new Roman camp was documented – mainly for its topographical features – far away from any known camp from Şureanu Mountains. It has a typical size of the encampments from around Sarmizegetusa Regia, 5 hectares, as no one reaches a full-size legionary camp. Having tituli and being made of two parts separated by a palisade, it finds also analogies in the region (as Comărnicel 1). What is really outstanding at the encampment from Cracul Găurilor i…
Archaeological excavations at the roman fort Băneasa in the summer 2017
Systematic Field Survey on Limes Transalutanus. Săpata Case
Two adjoined forts and their surroundings, elements of the 3rd century Roman frontier in Dacia – Limes Transalutanus, which were last archaeologically investigated in 1930, were recently systematic surface surveyed, resulting in the identification of the associated civilian settlement in what seemed, at first glance, as an unexpected location, more distant than other military vici the team had previously identified along the same frontier line. No…
New archaeological researches at the roman fort from Băneasa (Teleorman county)
One Hundred Sherds. Chilia-Militari Culture Reloaded. Alexandria Pottery Case
Preparing themselves for field survey along Limes Transalutanus, the authors are looking for references – other than book descriptions and drawings – concerning the so-called Chilia-Militari culture, laying on the both sides of the Roman frontier, stretching from the second half of the second century up to the late third (or early fourth) century. After several attempts with pottery contained in exhibitions, they finally reached an unprocessed lo…
Landscape Archaeology Along Limes Transalutanus
The project addresses the historical monuments comprised in the longest Roman ‘linear defence’ structure present on the Romanian territory. Despite it being the longest, this historic structure is the least protected and the least known in its technical details. Was indeed Limes Transalutanus an incomplete limes (lacking civilian settlements, for example), an odd construction (a vallum without fossa), an early-alarm line rather than a proper defe…

Săpături de salvare la hanul Constantin Vodă (1996)
A major real estate development required a rescue archaeology intervention in the very downtown Bucharest, mainly between February and June 1996. A large section, 75 long and about 3 m large was made in the street, mostly mechanically, just in the front of the National History Museum. The archaeological rescue digging documented 12 rooms belonging to a large inn, built by a famous Ruler of the Romanian Country (Ţara Românească), Constantin Brânco…
FTIR and statistical studies on amber artefacts from three Romanian archaeological sites
Non-destructive analysis of amber artefacts from the prehistoric Cioclovina hoard (Romania)
Introducere în conservarea și restaurarea chihlimbarului
The subject is not new in the international literature, so it shouldn’t need an “introduction”. For the Romanian conservators the subject is not new, by itself, but special studies in the field have not been done. The paper aims only to make the first step forward. Doubtfully interesting abroad, it is rendered in Romanian, to be sure that at least some basics are accessible for museum’s staffs. The opportunity to make some homework, as well as so…
The paper is dealing with the Lower Danube Plain for the end of Late Antiquity and its cultural equation. There are challenged some major themes of the sixth century archaeology, such Romanization, Slavic migration, spontaneous Christian practices, funerary rites, power symbols, so called “ethnic synthesis”. “Romanization” is not a very well known word, being absent from most of English dictionaries (see than the French romaniser). This is yet a …

Some time ago had appeared a paper of mine, Introduction in the Pottery's Volume from VIth Century, in the Northern part of the Lower Danube, in Arheologia Medievală 2 (1988). From that paper is missing an important Appendix, regarding the formula for pots' capacity. The starting point is the truncated cone formula, corresponding to the upper and lower parts of the pot. It is to get an upper volume (Vol_ab + Vol_bc) and a lower volume (Vol_ag + V…
