  • Unbecoming Archives: Anne Sexton's "Perverse" Imagination

    Dawn Skorczewski•ARTICLE•American imago•2023

It is impossible to read much about American poet Anne Sexton before encountering references to her "perverse" imagination. Critics routinely argue that she paints a perverse vision of childhood sexuality, female identity, and adult sexuality in her work, and they often object to her frank discussions of the body, its pleasures, and its dangerous powers. Her depictions of mental illness, initiated in To Bedlam and Part Way Back , also earned the …

Powieść Wojciecha Kudyby Imigranci wracają do domu swoim tytułem sugeruje możliwość uznania jej za głos w dyskusji politycznej na temat powrotu polskich migrantów ekonomicznych do kraju. Jednak zastosowana konwencja monologu wypowiedzianego i metafizyczna perspektywa narracji podają w wątpliwość prawomocność doraźnych odczytań instrumentalizujących. Rozpatrując powieść w kontekście postsekularnej kondycji współczesnego, kosmopolitycznego społecze…

  • The Poetics of Boundary Violation: Anne Sexton and Her Psychiatrist

    Charles Levin, Dawn Skorczewski•ARTICLE•Psychoanalytic Dialogues•2020

In 1965, Frederick Duhl began a sexual relationship with his patient, poet Anne Sexton, whose previous psychiatrist, Martin Orne, had moved from Boston to Philadelphia. Little is known about this relationship, perhaps because Sexton was persuaded by health professionals, including her previous psychiatrist, not to expose Dr. Duhl. These professionals closed ranks behind Duhl, covering up the ethical misconduct, which may have contributed to Anne …

  • Bringing It All Back Home: Reply to Celenza

    Charles Levin, Dawn Skorczewski•ARTICLE•Psychoanalytic Dialogues•2020

In our response to Andrea Celenza (this issue), we take this opportunity to develop some of the implications of her original work and the Fred Duhl-Anne Sexton tragedy. We concur with Celenza that the ethics revolution in North American psychoanalysis, which dates only from the mid 1980s, has not entirely transformed the landscape. After reflecting briefly on Sexton’s cultural legacy, and on the concept of analytic love, we suggest that psychoana…

Making a careful record of his visit, he traveled the world to tell its leaders what he had witnessed. Karski is one of the most significant witnesses of the Holocaust, whose experiences have been documented innumerable times. To date, however, no comparative study exists of Karski’s interviews. Dawn Skorczewski, G Siertsema•ARTICLE•Holocaust Studies•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 5

A higher percentage of Dutch Jews were exterminated in death camps during World War II than from any Western European country except Germany. Although scholars address myriad aspects of this vexing history, silences remain regarding how certain Dutch groups managed to survive. For example, Dutch historiographies devote fewer than a dozen pages to the 100 surviving members of Amsterdam’s Diamond Group, which included over 1000 individuals in 1940.…

In 1991, when it was revealed that the psychiatrist Martin Orne had released tapes of his therapy sessions with Anne Sexton to her biographer, mental health professionals expressed concern and outrage. Those who actually listen to the controversial tapes would be curious to find a debate between Sexton and Orne about mental illness, creativity, and therapeutic process. To what extent did Sexton’s creative accomplishments point to aspects of her p…

  • Analyst as Teacher / Teacher as Analyst: A Confusion of Tongues

    Open Access•Dawn Skorczewski•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 21

An ad hoc volunteer force, psychoanalytic educators must make do with little formal preparation in teaching methods before they enter the classroom. When they inevitably encounter common pedagogical problems, they often attribute their difficulty to a personal failure or the recalcitrance of candidates, but rarely to a lack of instruction in the craft of teaching. Given this situation, how can analysts who spend most of their time with patients l…
