  • Methodology of Mosaicking and Georeferencing for Multi-Sheet Early Maps with Irregular Cuts Using the Example of the Topographic Chart of the Kingdom of Poland

Open Access•Jakub Kuna, Tomasz Panecki et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2024

The Topographic Chart of the Kingdom of Poland (pol. Topograficzna Karta Królestwa Polskiego, commonly referred to as ‘the Quartermaster’s Map’, hereinafter: TKKP) is the first Polish modern topographic map of Poland (1:126,000, 1843). Cartographic historians acclaim its conception by the General Quartermaster of the Polish Army, noting its editorial principles and technical execution as exemplars of the early 19th-century cartographic standards.…

  • Mapping Imprecision

    Open Access•Tomasz Panecki•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2023

This paper aims to present and discuss the method of geocoding historical place names from historic maps that cannot be georeferenced in the GIS environment. This concerns especially maps drawn in the early modern period, i.e., before the common use of precise topographic surveys. Such maps are valuable sources of place names and geocoding them is an asset to historical and geographical analyses. Geocoding is a process of matching spatial data (s…

  • A Paradoxical Map

    Tomasz Panecki, Wiesława Duży•ARTICLE•Imago Mundi•2022

Between 1807 and 1812 a Polish nobleman named Edward Raczyński funded the making of a multi-sheet topographic map at a scale of 1:125,000. Neither completed nor published, the map was lost in the Second World War and survives only in the form of photostatic copies: one set made by a local scholar, another by an occupying army. While Raczyński’s map has been mined for its historical data, the authors see it as a paradox on two levels. It is argued…

  • Heat Maps

Open Access•Katarzyna Słomska-Przech, Tomasz Panecki et al.•ARTICLE•ISPRS International Journal of…•2021

Recently, due to Web 2.0 and neocartography, heat maps have become a popular map type for quick reading. Heat maps are graphical representations of geographic data density in the form of raster maps, elaborated by applying kernel density estimation with a given radius on point- or linear-input data. The aim of this study was to compare the usability of heat maps with different levels of generalization (defined by radii of 10, 20, 30, and 40 pixel…
