A regional seabed geomorphological map over part of the southwestern pacific plate
We use the GEBCO global bathymetric product alongside other data sets, including magnetic anomaly and vertical gravity gradient, to interpret the seabed geomorphology of approximately 24.7 million km2 of the southwestern Pacific Plate at an effective scale of 1:3,000,000. Manual interpretation was performed to accurately define abyssal plain basins, plateaus, troughs, faults, tectonic and volcanic rises, volcanic chains and other geomorphic units…
Small and sick newborn care: Changes in service readiness scoring between baseline and 2023 for 65 neonatal units implementing with Nest360 in Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, and Tanzania
Health Facility Assessments (HFAs) are important for measuring and tracking service readiness for small and sick newborn care (SSNC). NEST360 Alliance aims to reduce neonatal mortality in four countries (Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Tanzania). NEST360 and UNICEF facilitated HFA tool design with ministries of health in four African countries and developed two complimentary approaches to summarise readiness. Using the NEST360/UNICEF HFA tool, we collect…
The UV Dose Used for Disinfection of Drinking Water in Sweden Inadequately Inactivates Enteric Virus with Double-Stranded Genomes
Irradiation with ultraviolet light (UV) at 254 nm is effective in inactivating a wide range of human pathogens. In Sweden, a UV dose of 400 J/m 2 is often used for the treatment of drinking water. To investigate its effect on virus inactivation, enteric viruses with different genomic organizations were irradiated with three UV doses (400, 600, and 1000 J/m 2 ), after which their viability on cell cultures was examined. Adenovirus type 2 (double-s…

Foreign Technology Transfer and Productivity: Evidence From a Matched Sample
We examine the causal effects of alternative foreign technology transfer channels on the productivity of Turkish manufacturing plants, using propensity score matching techniques that limit implicit assumptions about plant homogeneity and self selection imbedded in standard estimates of such effects. We find positive impacts of technology transfer through foreign direct investment (FDI), exporting, and importing on both total factor and labor prod…
Driving forces for consolidation or fragmentation of the US water utility industry: A cost function approach with endogenous output
Public Infrastructure Investment, Interstate Spatial Spillovers, and Manufacturing Costs
Effects of public infrastructure investment on the costs and productivity of private enterprises have proven difficult to quantify empirically. One piece of this puzzle that has received little attention is spatial spillovers. We apply a cost-function model to 1982–1996 state-level U.S. manufacturing data, to untangle the private cost-saving effects of inter- and intrastate public infrastructure investment. We implement two spatial adaptations—in…

Cost Economies and Market Power: The Case of the U.S. Meat Packing Industry
Increasing size of establishments and resulting concentration in U.S. industries may stem from various types of cost economies. In particular, scale economies arising from technological factors embodied in plant and equipment may be a driving force for such market structure changes. In this case, typical market power measures like Lerner indices can be misleading: if scale (cost) economies prevail, cost efficiencies rather than market deficiencie…
Efficiency in New Zealand Sheep and Beef Farming: The Impacts of Regulatory Reform
In this study, we consider the impacts of dramatic regulatory reform during the 1980s on the efficiency of farms in New Zealand, using unbalanced panel data. A translog distance function representing the multiple output and input technology and incorporating nonneutral regulatory impacts is used for the analysis. Determinants of technical inefficiency, including a regulatory variable, a time term, and a debt/equity ratio, are also incorporated in…
