  • The Effects of US Additional Tariffs in Trump 2.0 on Production and Trade

Open Access•Kazunobu Hayakawa, Souknilanh Keola et al.•ARTICLE•The Developing Economies•2026

This study uses three types of data to quantify the impact of Trump 2.0 in Thailand. First, using product‐level trade data from January 2023 to July 2025, we show that the additional US tariffs have significantly decreased exports of automobiles and some steel/aluminum products to the US. In contrast, exports of auto parts and other items subject to additional tariffs do not change significantly. Second, using industry‐level production data from …

With exploitation of satellite data, this paper uncovers the changes of economic activities in Russian cities from 1989 to 2012. Compared to the findings by population, satellite data allowed us to explore possibilities to understand the spread and growth in the intensity of economic activities in space and size. This paper examines the so called “Siberian Curse” where soviet era regional development policies, urban growth, and migration restrict…

    Open Access•Souknilanh Keola, Kazunobu Hayakawa•ARTICLE•The Developing Economies•2021

This study empirically investigates how much economic and social activities were decreased by the implementation of lockdown policies during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic. We measure the magnitude of those activities using nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emissions. Our observations include daily NO2 emissions in 173 countries from January 1 to July 31, 2020. Our findings can be summarized as follows. Lockdown policies significantly decr…

  • Shedding Light on the Shadow Economy

Kiyoyasu Tanaka, Souknilanh Keola•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2017

Measuring the shadow economy is inherently difficult, but critical for understanding economic development. Using census data on formal and informal sectors in Cambodia, we document that 96.6 per cent of non-farm establishments do not formally register with the government, and their sales accounted for 76.6 per cent of total sales in 2011. Estimating their past sales from changes in nighttime light for 1993–2010, we find that both formal and infor…
