  • Collaborative learning in the Vietnam Escuela Nueva Model and students’ learning behaviors: A mixed methods longitudinal study

Open Access•Khoa Vu, Vu Dao et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024•References: 4

We study how Vietnam's Escuela Nueva, a pedagogical reform that promotes participatory and collaborative learning in primary schools, affects students' learning behaviors in short and long run. Using a propensity score matching approach, we find that the model increases the likelihood of giving and receiving feedback from peers as well as asking questions in class. The peer-learning effects appear to persist in the long run as students enter lowe…

  • What Explains Vietnam's Exceptional Performance in Education Relative to Other Countries? Analysis of the 2012, 2015, and 2018 Pisa Data

Open Access•Hai-Anh Dang, Paul Glewwe et al.•ARTICLE•Economics of Education Review•2023

Despite being the poorest or second poorest participant, Vietnam outperformed all other developing countries, and many wealthier countries, on the 2012, 2015, and 2018 PISA assessments. We investigate Vietnam's strong performance, evaluating several possible explanations for this apparent exemplary achievement. After correcting for potentially non-representative PISA samples, including bias from Vietnam's large out-of-school population, Vietnam r…

  • Maternity benefits mandate and women’s choice of work in Vietnam

    Open Access•Khoa Vu, Paul Glewwe•ARTICLE•World Development•2022•Cited by: 7•References: 2

Despite a sizable literature on the labor market effects of maternity leave regulation on women in developed countries, how these policies affect women’s work in developing countries with a large informal sector remains poorly understood. This study examines how extending the maternity leave requirement affects women’s decision to work in the informal or formal sector in Vietnam. We use a difference-in-differences approach to evaluate the 2012 Am…

  • Tenurial security and agricultural investment: Evidence from Vietnam

    Open Access•Marc F Bellemare, Kenn Chua et al.•ARTICLE•Food Policy•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 4

In Vietnam, all lands belong to the state, which assigns usufruct rights to those lands to individuals and households. In 1993, the state gave 20-year usufruct rights to growers of annual crops, and 50-year usufruct rights to growers of perennial crops. In 2013, as the usufruct rights of growers of annual crops were about to expire, the Vietnamese government passed a law—the Land Law of 2013—that extended the usufruct rights of all landowners by …
