  • Political Economy of Environmental Policy Under Trade

    Open Access•Sherzod B Akhundjanov, Stephen Devadoss•ARTICLE•World Economy•2026

The link between environment and trade has long been the subject of intense policy debate. This study reviews the existing literature and addresses key gaps. We develop a unified framework that incorporates environmental externalities (local versus global), abatement, political competition, and trade. The model shows how producer and consumer/environmentalist lobbying incentives over pollution stringency interact, and how these incentives vary wi…

  • The Covid ‐19 pandemic and trade in agricultural products

    Open Access•William Ridley, Sherzod B Akhundjanov et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2023

In this study, we develop a structural gravity model to analyse the effects of the ongoing COVID‐19 pandemic on international trade in food and agriculture. Using detailed data on trade flows, we estimate the trade impacts of the pandemic for major sectors in food and agriculture. Supply‐side impacts on trade caused by reductions in labour tend to be largest in labour‐intensive sectors such as meat processing and processed fruit and vegetables. T…

  • Decomposition of extensive and intensive margin impacts of trade policies

Open Access•Xin Zhao, Jeff Luckstead et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2022

Using a multi‐region heterogeneous‐firm trade model, this paper develops a method to decompose volumes and values of domestic sales, bilateral trade, total production and consumption into their intensive and extensive margins. With the free‐entry condition, the extensive margin is further decomposed into two subcategories: operating‐extensive margin and entrance/exit‐extensive margin. This method can provide ex ante predictions on gains and losse…

  • Spatial equilibrium analysis of Chinese tariff on world cotton markets

    Open Access•Ethan Sabala, Stephen Devadoss•ARTICLE•World Economy•2021

We develop a theoretical and an empirical spatial equilibrium model ( SEM ) to analyse the effects of the 25% Chinese cotton tariff on United States, Chinese and world markets. The tariff causes US cotton price, production and exports to decrease, while simultaneously increasing China's price and production. The SEM determines the trade reallocations caused by the Chinese tariff. The United States diverts some of its exports to other importing co…

  • Political economy of the US–Mexican tomato trade agreement

    Open Access•Stephen Devadoss, Elijah Kosse•ARTICLE•World Economy•2020

We develop a political economy model to analyse the US–Mexican tomato trade agreement by treating the minimum import price as a negotiated settlement. We incorporate the special characteristics of the US–Mexican tomato dispute, namely trade among large countries, the role of competing fresh and processed tomato lobbies, quota revenues accruing to Mexican producers, bargaining for a minimum import price rather than a tariff, and the role of the Ca…

  • US–Brazilian cotton policies

    Open Access•Stephen Devadoss, Jeff Luckstead•ARTICLE•World Economy•2020

Brazil filed a lawsuit with the WTO against the United States for providing cotton production and export subsidies, and the WTO ruled in favour of Brazil. Brazil threatened to impose retaliatory tariffs if the United States does not comply with the WTO rulings. After a prolonged litigation stretching from 2002 to 2010, both countries agreed to a negotiated settlement wherein the United States paid Brazilian cotton producers to compensate for any …
