  • The role of global value chains for worker tasks and wage inequality

Open Access•Piotr Lewandowski, Karol Madoń et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2024

This paper studies the relationship between global value chain (GVC) participation, worker‐level routine task intensity (RTI) and wage inequality within countries. Using survey data from 34 countries and instrumenting for GVC participation, we find that higher GVC participation contributes to higher wage inequality in high‐income countries and lower wage inequality in middle‐ and low‐income countries. We distinguish between two opposite‐working c…

  • Sub‐Saharan Africa's participation in global value chains: 1995–2021

Open Access•Michele Mancini, Aaditya Mattoo et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2023

This paper examines Sub‐Saharan Africa's (SSA) role in global value chains (GVCs) through a new comprehensive country‐sector level database. It reaffirms known aspects: SSA's involvement in GVCs has grown but still trails other regions, especially in manufacturing. Typically, SSA is involved in upstream production stages, exporting commodities that are later processed and re‐exported by other countries. Only few SSA countries have integrated into…

  • Pandemic trade: Covid‐19, remote work and global value chains

Open Access•Alvaro Espitia, Aaditya Mattoo et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2022

This paper studies the trade effects of COVID‐19 using monthly disaggregated trade data for 28 countries and multiple trading partners from the beginning of the pandemic to June 2020. Regression results based on a sector‐level gravity model show that the negative trade effects induced by COVID‐19 shocks varied widely across sectors. Sectors more amenable to remote work contracted less throughout the pandemic. Importantly, participation in global …

  • Outsourcing Economics: Global Value Chains in Capitalist Development

    Open Access•William Milberg, Deborah Winkler•BOOK•Outsourcing Economics•2013

Outsourcing Economics has a double meaning. First, it is a book about the economics of outsourcing. Second, it examines the way that economists have understood globalization as a pure market phenomenon, and as a result have 'outsourced' the explanation of world economic forces to other disciplines. Markets are embedded in a set of institutions - labor, government, corporate, civil society, and household - that mold the power asymmetries that infl…

  • Firm location and the determinants of exporting in low- and middle-income countries

Thomas Farole, Deborah Winkler•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2013•References: 2

Using a cross-section of more than 35,000 manufacturing and services firms in 76 low- and middle-income countries, we assess how firm location determines the likelihood of exporting. Results from a probit model show that, in addition to firm-specific characteristics, both regional investment climate and agglomeration factors have a significant impact on export participation. Export spillovers and industry diversity are associated with increased e…
