Wytwarzanie przeszłości”. Refleksje na temat książki Porządek dziedzictwa XIX wieku. Polskie pojęcia i wyobrażenia
Artykuł przedstawia recenzowane dzieło, zarysowując jego kontekst, główne cele oraz problematykę, a następnie w sposób selektywny streszcza kluczowe tezy i strukturę argumentacji. Autorka podejmuje w nim krytyczną analizę zastosowanego podejścia teoretycznego i metodologicznego, ocenia oryginalność i spójność wywodu, a także wskazuje na mocne i słabsze strony publikacji. Umiejscawia też recenzowaną pracę w szerszej literaturze przedmiotu, co pozw…
The Story of Mālinī (Mālinī-vastu) in the Mahāvastu
This paper presents a new edition and translation of the chapter Mālinī-vastu as preserved in the Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit text Mahāvastu, together with a grammatical commentary and some notes on the structure of this chapter. The edition is based on the oldest manuscript of the Mahāvastu, the so-called ms. Sa, which often offers better readings than those proposed by Émile Senart in his editio princeps of the text from 1882–1897
Fugitive Aesthetics: Echoes, Ghost Stories and Refugee Cinema
This article discusses four recently released refugee films: Dolce Fine Giornata, Atlantics, Island of the Hungry Ghosts, and Life Overtakes Me. It draws on a range of theoretical frames, including the work of Avery Gordon and Jacques Derrida on spectrality, in order to outline the original concept of ‘fugitive aesthetics’, the narrative and stylistic system that, we argue, underpins a wide spectrum of refugee films. While the majority of films a…
The Thirty-Two Marks of a Great Man in Two Metrical Lists in the Mahāvastu
The paper presents an edition, translation, and analysis of two metrical lists of the major marks of a Great Man (mahāpuruṣalakṣaṇa), which occur in the Mahāvastu. The lists consist of one-word designations pertaining to particular features. The edition is based on the oldest manuscript of the Mahāvastu, the so-called Ms. Sa, which offers better readings than those proposed by Émile Senart in his editio princeps of the text from 1882–1897
Pandemia: Czas Lęków, Modlitwy I Przeobrażeń Społecznych
Tu przede wszystkim zwraca …
The Oxford Handbook of Communist Visual Cultures
The Oxford Handbook of Communist Visual Cultures critically examines and historically reconstructs the visual practices that have accompanied social transformations initiated by communist ideals in various parts of the world in the twentieth century. Bringing together diverse and broadly understood visual texts, including architecture, interior design, cartoons, computer games, fashion, photography, film and television, this volume explores how c…
The Effects of Cognitive Task and Change of Height on Postural Stability and Cardiovascular Stress in Workers Working at Height
The purpose of the study was to analyze the effects of cognitive task and change of height on the postural stability and cardiovascular stress of at-height workers. The study included 32 healthy men aged 25-47. Due to the type of work performed, two groups were identified: at‒height workers, HW ( n = 16), and office workers (mainly work at desk with a computer) OW ( n = 16). The objective measures of postural stability (posturography) and cardiov…
The Effect of Nordic Walking Training with Poles with an Integrated Resistance Shock Absorber on the Functional Fitness of Women over the Age of 60
Inadequate levels of physical activity among older people lead to a gradual decline in self-reliance and consequent dependence on other people. The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of Nordic walking training with poles with an integrated resistance shock absorber on the functional fitness of older women. Forty-two women ( M age = 64.7 ± 3.15 years) were randomly assigned into the experimental group-training with poles with an integrate…
Protesting Citizenship: Migrant Activisms
What does it mean to state 'No One is Illegal?'. This rallying call is what unifies migrant protests against exclusionary border regimes around the world, bringing migrants, citizens, 'legal' and 'illegal' people onto the streets in ever greater numbers. Indeed, the last decade has witnessed an explosion of immigrant protests, political mobilizations by irregular migrants and pro-migrant activists. This edited collection aims to contribute to the…
Our Mythical Childhood… The Classics and Literature for Children and Young Adults
This volume offers a survey of the reception of Classical Antiquity in the literature for youngsters by applying regional perspectives from East-Central and Western Europe, Africa, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, and the United States. The title Our Mythical Childhood hints at the elusive and paradoxical potential of the ancient tradition that is both a fixed base shared by many people worldwide since their early life as well as a body of ref…

Legal/illegal: Protesting citizenship in Fortress America
This article examines the issue of legality and illegality, focusing on U.S. citizenship, anti-immigrant rage, and pro-immigrant protests. The central case study is an analysis of what I call digital rage, namely, the rhetorical strategies present in anti-immigrant online activism. I argue that online performance of rage invests in acts of bordering (Nyers 2008) which propel a discourse of white supremacist pure nation and neurotic citizenship (I…
Immigrant protest: An Introduction
The last decade has witnessed an explosion of ‘immigrant protests’, political mobilizations by irregular migrants and pro-migrant activists. This special issue on ‘immigrant protest’ has emerged in response to this rise in the visibility of immigrant protests, and its central aim is to contribute to the growing body of scholarship on migrant resistance movements and to consider the implications of these struggles for critical understandings of ci…
Pedagogy of Anxiety
The Pedagogy of Anxiety project has been inspired by my teaching experiences in a graduate film and media seminar, Transnational Feminist Practices, which I have offered in the English Department at Ohio University. The core of the project is an analysis of Mandy Jacobson and Karmen Jelinčić’s 1996 Calling the Ghosts: A Story about Rape, War, and Women, a testimonial documentary that reconstructs war events involving two women who grapple with re…
Post-socialist hybrids
Focusing on the architectural and media design of the New European landscape of Poland, this article introduces the concept of `post-socialist hybridity' as a metaphor to capture the contradictions and ambivalences that have emerged in the post-Berlin Wall period. This hybridity is connected to Poland's spectral nationality: that is, the way in which socialism, although officially dead, continues to haunt the nation. As post-socialist transformat…
Foreign Women and Toilets
This article considers representations of migrant women who work as domestic help and probes the abjecting logic of cleaning practices vis-à-vis current issues of legality, illegality, immigration, transcultural difference, and rage. I survey diverse media depictions of foreign women and cleaning scenes in transnational settings: Fear and Trembling (2003), Maid in America (2004), The Ukrainian Cleaning Lady (2002 The Ukrainian Cleaning Lady (Pani…
Cicero und Caesar. Ein Dialog der Dichter
The paper presents a brief survey of the literary dialogue between Cicero and Caesar carried out by means of poetry. Both Cicero and Caesar wrote verses at nearly all the stages of their private life and political carreer. However, this poetry did not have a positive reputation, already in the Antiquity: Cicero was alleged to be a famous graphomaniac and Caesar was considered to have more luck as a poet only because his verses were less known tha…

New Europe: Eyes Wide Shut
As the dominant discussions of globalization focus on the first/third world axis, they hardly ever gesture toward the space once known as the second world. ‘New Europe: Eyes Wide Shut’ engages photography and media culture to draw attention to this distinct area. ‘Negro Go Home’; ‘Jews to Gas’; ‘Fuck the Jews’ are among the most chilling and shocking graffiti that overwhelmingly mark the streets of contemporary Łódź, the second largest city in Po…

The Lalitavistara is one of the most influential hagiographies of the Buddha. It has been known in Sanskrit since the early days of modern studies of Buddhism, but was long available only in inadequate editions. That has now changed with the publication of the edition of K. Hokazono, now complete in three volumes. The present paper discusses something of the history of the study of the text, Hokazono's edition, and another recent book by G. Ducoe…
