  • Markets, Institutions, and Morality

    Open Access•Rainer Klump•ARTICLE•Journal of Contextual Economics –…•2024

Critics of the market economy are convinced that markets will inevitably destroy the morality of individual market participants and thus contribute to major economic and social crises. Even Wilhelm Röpke, a great champion of economic liberalism, wrote repeatedly about this danger. This paper tries to retrieve the mechanisms that usually prevent the moral degeneration of the market economy and might rather contribute to some moral dividend in mark…

  • Tracking the Rise of Robots: The IFR Database

Anne Jurkat, Rainer Klump et al.•ARTICLE•Jahrbucher fur Nationalokonomie…•2022

We present and analyze the dataset on the international distribution of industrial robots by country, industry, and application provided by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) since 1993. After describing the IFR we point out specificities and limitations of its dataset. We explain the process of data collection, develop a correspondence table between the IFR industry classification and the ISIC rev. 4 industry classification, and clar…

  • The Formation of a “Spirit of Capitalism” in Upper Germany: Leonhard Fronsperger’s “On the Praise of Self-Interest”

Open Access•Rainer Klump, Lars Pilz•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of…•2021

In 1564, Leonhard Fronsperger, a military expert and citizen of the Free Imperial City of Ulm in Upper Germany, publishes the booklet “On the Praise of Self-Interest” (“Von dem Lob deß Eigen Nutzen”). Using the form of a satirical poem, he demonstrates how the individual pursuit of self-interest can lead to the common good. Writing long before Bernard Mandeville and Adam Smith, Fronsperger presents a thorough analysis of all kinds of self-interes…

  • An Ordoliberal Interpretation of Adam Smith

    Rainer Klump, Manuel Wörsdörfer•CHAPTER•ORDO 61•2010

The aim of the following paper is to examine the complementarities (and divergences) between the paleoliberal Adam Smith and the ordoliberal Walter Eucken. Following the hypothesis that Smith is among the forerunners and predecessors of Ordoliberalism and Social Market Economy, we try to provide the reader with an insight into the socio-political philosophy of Smith and Eucken pointing at similarities and differences alike. Therefore, we base our…

  • Factor Substitution and Factor-Augmenting Technical Progress in the United States: A Normalized Supply-Side System Approach

Rainer Klump, Peter McAdam et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2007

Using a normalized CES function with factor-augmenting technical progress, we estimate a supply-side system of the U.S. economy from 1953 to 1998. Avoiding potential estimation biases that may have occurred in earlier studies and putting a high emphasis on data consistency, we obtain robust results not only for the aggregate elasticity of substitution but also for the parameters of labor and capital augmenting technical change. We find that the e…
