  • Assessing potential implications of the EU's carbon dioxide removal strategy on Brazil's land ecosystems and local communities

    Open Access•Joana Portugal‐Pereira, Aline C Soterroni et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2025•References: 8

  • Using policy scenarios to assess challenges and opportunities for reaching restoration targets in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest

    Open Access•Yara Shennan‐Farpón, Aline C Soterroni et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

Brazil’s Atlantic Forest is a global restoration hotspot. Most of the remaining forest areas are degraded and separated by large cities, and agricultural lands essential for national food security. Brazil’s restoration agenda is defined by multiple national and global restoration targets and policies, including Brazil’s Native Vegetation Protection Law (No. 12,651/2012) also known as the Forest Code, which sets minimum levels of native vegetation…

  • Integrated modeling of nature’s role in human well-being: A research agenda

    Open Access•Rebecca Chaplin‐Kramer, Stephen Polasky et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 10

Integrated models can assess effects of ecosystem services on the global economy. • Insights from integrated models can improve management for sustainable development. • To be most useful, models need to link ecological impacts and human well-being. • Key advances include better incorporation of equity and social-ecological feedbacks. Integrated assessment models that incorporate biodiversity and ecosystem services could be an important tool for …

  • Eroding resilience of deforestation interventions—evidence from Brazil’s lost decade

Open Access•Nikolas Kuschnig, Lukas Vashold et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

Brazil once set the example for curtailing deforestation with command and control policies, but, in the last decade, these interventions have gone astray. Environmental research and policy today are largely informed by the earlier successes of deforestation interventions, but not their recent failures. Here, we investigate the resilience of deforestation interventions. We discuss how the recent trend reversal in Brazil came to be, and what its im…

  • Current policies are insufficient to protect or restore Brazil’s cost-effective conservation priority zones

Open Access•Rafael G Ramos, Marluce Scarabello et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

In Brazil, conservation priority zones, in spite of their key role in preserving natural vegetation and its environmental resources are frequently located outside the country’s public network of protected areas (PAs). Here we present the first study on land-use impacts inside Brazil’s unprotected (i.e. outside PAs) Cost-Effective conservation priority Zones (CEZs), for the period 2020–2050. CEZs are conservation priority zones that had experience…

  • A decentralized approach to model national and global food and land use systems

    Open Access•Aline Mosnier, Valeria Javalera-Rincon et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

The achievement of several sustainable development goals and the Paris Climate Agreement depends on rapid progress towards sustainable food and land systems in all countries. We have built a flexible, collaborative modeling framework to foster the development of national pathways by local research teams and their integration up to global scale. Local researchers independently customize national models to explore mid-century pathways of the food a…

  • Impact of land tenure on deforestation control and forest restoration in Brazilian Amazonia

Open Access•Gilberto Câmara, Rolf Simões et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

This study examines how land tenure constrains Brazil’s ability to meet its deforestation control and forest restoration goals in its Amazonia biome. Our findings are based on an updated assessment of land tenure and land use in the region. Between 2019 and 2021, 44% of deforestation in Amazonia occurred in private lands, while forest removal in settlements ranged from 31% to 27% of the total. Deforestation in undesignated public lands increased …

  • How can diverse national food and land-use priorities be reconciled with global sustainability targets? Lessons from the Fable initiative

    Open Access•Aline Mosnier, Guido Schmidt‐Traub et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainability Science•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 8

There is an urgent need for countries to transition their national food and land-use systems toward food and nutritional security, climate stability, and environmental integrity. How can countries satisfy their demands while jointly delivering the required transformative change to achieve global sustainability targets? Here, we present a collaborative approach developed with the FABLE—Food, Agriculture, Biodiversity, Land, and Energy—Consortium t…

  • Conserving the Cerrado and Amazon biomes of Brazil protects the soy economy from damaging warming

    Open Access•Rafaela Flach, Gabriel Medeiros Abrahão et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 2

In tropical regions, widespread loss of native forest and savanna vegetation is increasing extreme heat, particularly in agricultural regions. Using the case of rising extreme heat from lost forest and savanna vegetation in Brazilian Amazon and Cerrado regions, we modeled losses to soy production, the region’s principal economic activity. We assessed two types of extreme-heat regulation values: the value of avoided extreme-heat exposure of soy fr…

  • Land-use impacts of Brazilian wind power expansion

Open Access•Olga Turkovska, Gabriel Malta Castro et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

While wind power is a low-carbon renewable energy technology with relatively little land footprint, the necessary infrastructure expansion still has land-related environmental impacts. Brazil has seen more than a ten-fold increase in wind power capacity in the last decade. However, little is known about these impacts of wind power generation in Brazil compared to other world regions, although Brazilian wind power infrastructure is concentrated in…

  • Future environmental and agricultural impacts of Brazil’s Forest Code

Open Access•Aline C Soterroni, Aline Mosnier et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2018

The role of improving the enforcement of Brazil's Forest Code in reducing deforestation in the Amazon has been highlighted in many studies. However, in a context of strong political pressure for loosening environmental protections, the future impacts of a nationwide implementation of the Forest Code on both environment and agriculture remain poorly understood. Here, we present a spatially explicit assessment of Brazil's 2012 Forest Code through t…
