  • The Interdependence of Theory and Experiment in Revolutionary Science

Open Access•D Hywel White, Daniel J Sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•1979•Cited by: 1•References: 1

An examination, primarily through citation analysis, is made of the changing interdependence of theory and experiment in a specialty within particle physics, the physics of weak interactions, during a period of rapid intellectual development. Lakatos' notions of how theory and experiment should be related during 'progressive' and 'stagnating' periods are used as guides for the analysis. At the conclusion a suggestion is offered as to the way in w…

  • Co-Citation Analyses of Science

Open Access•Daniel J Sullivan, Dan Sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•1977•Cited by: 5

For the past several years, Henry Small and collaborators1 have been arguing strongly on behalf of the utility of a technique called 'co-citation analysis' as a tool for understanding the specialty structure of science. Data which we have collected over the past two years on a specialty in elementary particle physics, the study of weak interactions,2 allow an evaluation of co-citation analysis, and we report the results in this Note. A series of …

  • The State of a Science

    Open Access•Daniel J Sullivan, Dan Sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•1977•Cited by: 9•References: 2

For several years now sociologists of science (and other science analysts) have been moving toward the study of scientific specialties and other smaller aggregates of scientists,1 such as theory groups2 and the 'problem domains' discussed by Studer and Chubin.3 These smaller intellectual and social divisions of science became an increasingly salient focus of attention because of their real importance for the ongoing requirements of specialized re…
