  • The environment as a human right

Egbert Boeker, Rienk van Grondelle•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2000•References: 2

The authors are physicists and believe that the quality of the natural environment of man should be high enough to keep serving as a resource for industrial and agricultural activities in the future and be a source of enjoyment for man. This poses limits on the way we deal with energy and resources and induces difficult questions for government policy. This article argues that straightforward technological ‘solutions’ or ‘fixes’ are necessary, bu…

  • Is technetium‐99 (Tc‐99) radiologically significant

    Frank Barnaby, Egbert Boeker•ARTICLE•Medicine Conflict & Survival•1999

According to radiological protection authorities the radioisotope technetium-99 (Tc-99) is not 'radiologically significant' to humans or other species. The Sellafield plutonium reprocessing plant discharges large amounts of Tc-99 into the Irish Sea; by the year 2015 a total of about 3,000 tera-becquerels of Tc-99, weighing about 5 tonnes, will have been discharged. This article considers the effects of Tc-99 on the environment. After discharge, T…

As the role of science in society has become more important and more complex, scientists have become increasingly conscious of their social responsibility. For the same reasons the systematic study of 'social responsibility' has received increasing attention. However, this study is still in its infancy. This is perhaps more true in the Netherlandsa than in Great Britain and the United States, where there exists a tradition in the study of science…
