The Unemployment Invariance Hypothesis in West Virginia
The efficacy of economic development policies in supporting struggling regions, like West Virginia, often depends on the relationship between the labor force participation rate (LFPR) and unemployment rate (UR). Policies aimed at raising wages, providing unemployment benefits, and implementing employment protections might increase long-term unemployment and perpetuate economic hardship (Layard et al. 2005 ). This study investigates the cointegrat…
A Markov regime-switching event response model
This research introduces a new method for event studies in time-series analysis named the Markov regime-switching event response model (MS-ERM). The MS-ERM is a comprehensive approach that integrates two different event study approaches: 1) measuring the impact of an event through structural shift and 2) measuring the impact via additional distributional components. As an empirical application, the study measures the impact of beef-packing plant …
The dynamics of labor force participation
This study examines the divergence and synchronicity of labor force participation rate (LFPR) dynamics across the USA. Using a dynamic factor model with time-varying stochastic volatility, we decompose each state’s LFPR into a national, regional, and state-specific latent factor. We find significant time variation in our factors and heterogeneous labor market responses and relative sensitivities. Our results show that, save for West Virginia, the…
The uniqueness of one apple versus another.” Exploring producer perspectives of hard cider in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic United States
Hard cider is growing in popularity throughout the United States (US). Though many scholars have investigated quality and trends in the expanding US cider industry, still little is known about cider producers’ opinions of the products that they make. How do American cider producers value and emplace value onto cider as the industry grows and competes with the broader alcoholic beverage market? This study explored producer perceptions of American …
Where is the value? The impacts of sow gestation crate laws on pork supply and consumer value perceptions
Despite varying farm animal welfare laws being enacted and considered, it is unclear and unknown whether they generate sufficient benefits to justify their costs. This study asks how sow gestation crate laws that dictate minimum crate size, a particular farm animal welfare law, impact meat production and the subsequent value that consumers place on meat produced under the laws. An observational analysis leverages the 8 states that have implemente…
