Robot Adoption and Occupational Health
How does robotization affect occupational health? In this paper, we investigate the impact of robot diffusion on workplace accidents and deaths in Italy, for the period 2008–2018. We adopt an instrumental variables (IV) approach that exploits robot adoption in Japan and South Korea to deal with endogeneity. We show that automation reduces fatal and non‐fatal accidents in particular for men. We provide evidence consistent with the idea that this r…
Influence of within-class age differences on adolescents’ eating behaviors
This study examines within-class age differences as a novel determinant of adolescents’ dietary behaviors, isolating it from confounders such as absolute age, season of birth, and country-specific school entry rules. Using a multi-country dataset of over 600,000 European students, we find that younger students within a class exhibit poorer dietary habits. Since confounders are controlled for, these effects are likely driven by peer influence. The…
This must be the place
We investigate the role of local amenities in shaping compensating wage differentials in labor market populated by high-skilled workers. Using 10 years of longitudinal data on workers productivity along with information on firms and location amenities, we evaluate whether workers are willing to pay to join a better firm and if firms with undesirable attributes must provide higher wages to attract workers. By accounting for unobserved workers hete…
Healthy Ageing for All? A Health Growth Incidence Curve Approach
We propose and apply a framework that analyses the distributional impact of episodes of overall health growth or decline. We use local smoothing to model the relationship between health outcomes and relative income rank and we introduce Health Growth Incidence Curves (HGIC) to graph the rate of change of health outcomes across the income distribution. We illustrate our framework with an analysis of the distributional dynamics of health and well‐b…
CBD at Work
This paper examines the causal impact of cannabidiol (CBD) product availability on workplace injuries, exploiting Italy’s unintended liberalization of low-THC cannabis as a natural experiment. We use a staggered difference-in-differences approach, leveraging variation in the timing of CBD retailer entries across provinces. We find that CBD availability leads to a reduction in workplace injury rates by 2.5%, with larger effects among young and pri…
Online health information seeking and Covid-19 vaccine hesitancy
We use recently released data from the Survey of Health Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) to investigate the role of online health information seeking on Covid-19 vaccine hesitancy, which is defined as the reluctance or refusal to receive vaccinations despite the availability of vaccines. We adopt an instrumental variable strategy that exploits the computerization of workplaces occurred in the last century to deal with endogeneity. We find …
