  • Gendered Legacies of Empire

Open Access•Elizabeth Kolsky, Elizabeth Kolsky Kolsky et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Colonialism and…•2025

This paper uses the concept of feminicide, developed by Latin American feminists, to illuminate patterns of gendered governance in colonial India and postcolonial Pakistan. We argue that the British Empire in India was built on the structural subordination of women, the normalization of gendered violence, and the devaluation of women's lives. We trace the long trajectory of state complicity in gendered violence back to British colonial legislatio…

  • Pious, populist, political masculinities in Pakistan and India

    Afiya Shehrbano Zia•ARTICLE•South Asian Popular Culture•2022•Cited by: 5•References: 5

This article makes a case for the inclusion of piety politics and populist masculinities in any analysis of the governance and international relations between two South Asian rivals and nuclear neighbours; Muslim-majority Pakistan and Hindu-majority India. It offers a comparative case-study of the redeemed Sufi masculinity of the recently deposed Pakistani Prime Minister, Imran Khan, and the ascetic Hindutva one performed by the Prime Minister of…

  • Can Rescue Narratives Save Lives? Honor Killing in Pakistan

Afiya Shehrbano Zia•ARTICLE•Signs: Journal of Women in…•2019

This essay closely examines the gendered discourse of shame, honor, violence, and sexuality as played out in Pakistan. The first half of the essay contextualizes the epistemological melee that has marked some post-9/11 feminist scholarship on honor violence. The essay argues that the prescription to regard honor crimes as deculturalized domestic violence, or as severed from Islamic discourse, is unhelpful. Through a conversation with a landowner …

  • Race, class, and agency

Open Access•Shahrzad Mojab, Afiya Shehrbano Zia•ARTICLE•Journal of Labor and Society•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 12

This article argues that the starting point for Marxist feminist praxis is not rooted in questions of identity, agency, authenticity, space, or body but in the oppression and the exploitation of women and men of the working class, peasants, urban poor, and national minorities. The analysis herein departs from the postmodernist study of language, representation, or culture and reaffirms how capitalization and modernization have bolstered tradition…

  • Unraveling the Bindings of Muslim Women

Afiya Shehrbano Zia, Shahrzad Mojab•ARTICLE•Journal of Middle East Women s…•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 1

These books are recent contributions to the continuing debate about Arab women and their affective engagement with Islam. The two overlapping themes in these publications are, first, the appeal and perspective of a post-Islamist political society in Muslim majority contexts, primarily using Egypt as an example, and, second, probing the older theme of fitna, the distracting potential of women’s sexuality and bodies and the ways it has been reclaim…

  • Performance anxiety

    Afiya Shehrbano Zia•ARTICLE•International Feminist Journal of…•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 12

The nexus of Islam, gender, race and violence has been keenly revisited in some post-9/11 scholarship. The concern over the racialized Muslim male body is justifiable in cases of rendition, torture and the kind of battlefields that mark the War on Terror. However, the sympathetic analysis of the tortured Muslim male body as a permanent and universally vulnerable imaginary has necessarily challenged the framing of sexual politics for Muslim contex…

  • Redefining faith and freedoms

    Afiya Shehrbano Zia•ARTICLE•Critical Studies on Terrorism•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 3

This essay argues that the “gendered attention” afforded to the “war on terror” (WoT), both in the West and in the case of Pakistan, has yielded merely two channels of representation for Muslim wom

  • Pakistan. Le féminisme réinventé

    Afiya Shehrbano Zia•ARTICLE•Hommes & migrations•2012

  • The Reinvention of Feminism in Pakistan

    Open Access•Afiya Shehrbano Zia•ARTICLE•Feminist Review•2009•Cited by: 11•References: 1

This article argues that there has been a significant turn in the discourse of feminist politics in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The author suggests that the rise of a new feminism - rooted in Islamic discourse, non-confrontational, privatized and personalized, whose objective is to 'empower' women within Islam - is not a post-9/11 development but rather a result of unresolved debates on the issue of religion within the progressive women's m…
