  • Reporting of structural population assumptions in prevalence-based studies of animal feeding operations and community health

Open Access•Brayan Alexander Fonseca Martinez, Jan M Sargeant et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Research on community health effects of Animal Feeding Operations (AFOs) frequently relies on prevalence-based effect measures, particularly for chronic respiratory outcomes. Interpreting these measures as indicators of comparative disease occurrence requires specific structural population assumptions, yet it remains unclear whether such assumptions are reported in this literature. We conducted a Mini Review of observational studies identified th…

  • Are Indigenous research principles incorporated into maternal health research? A scoping review of the global literature

  • The Influence of Climate and Livestock Reservoirs on Human Cases of Giardiasis

Open Access•Ariel Brunn, Ariel A Brunn et al.•ARTICLE•EcoHealth•2019

Giardia duodenalis is an intestinal parasite which causes diarrhoeal illness in people. Zoonotic subtypes found in livestock may contribute to human disease occurrence through runoff of manure into multi-use surface water. This study investigated temporal associations among selected environmental variables and G. duodenalis occurrence in livestock reservoirs on human giardiasis incidence using data collected in the Waterloo Health Region, Ontario…

  • Companion-Animal Relinquishment

Kim Lambert, Jason B Coe et al.•ARTICLE•Society and Animals•2019•Referencias: 4

There is a need to further understand companion-animal relinquishment in order to prevent it. This study explored published reviews and commentaries, written by primary stakeholders, on companion-animal relinquishment, including 77 reviews and commentaries published between 1973 and 2011. The analysis-method framework is conducive to analyzing reviews and commentaries on a complex social phenomenon such as companion-animal relinquishment. Four th…

  • Understanding Weather and Hospital Admissions Patterns to Inform Climate Change Adaptation Strategies in the Healthcare Sector in Uganda

    Open Access•Katherine E Bishop-Williams, Lea Berrang-Ford et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Background: Season and weather are associated with many health outcomes, which can influence hospital admission rates. We examined associations between hospital admissions (all diagnoses) and local meteorological parameters in Southwestern Uganda, with the aim of supporting hospital planning and preparedness in the context of climate change. Methods : Hospital admissions data and meteorological data were collected from Bwindi Community Hospital a…

  • Spatial-temporal epidemiology of human Salmonella Enteritidis infections with major phage types (PTs 1, 4, 5b, 8, 13, and 13a) in Ontario, Canada, 2008–2009

Open Access•Christine Vargas, Csaba Varga et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2015

Phage type-specific differences in exposure settings, and spatial-temporal clustering of S. Enteritidis infections were demonstrated that might guide public health surveillance of disease outbreaks. Our study methodology could be applied to other foodborne disease surveillance data to detect retrospective high disease rate clusters, which could aid public health authorities in developing effective prevention and control programs

  • A scoping review of scoping reviews

Open Access•Mai T Pham, Andrijana Rajić et al.•ARTICLE•Research Synthesis Methods•2014

BACKGROUND: The scoping review has become an increasingly popular approach for synthesizing research evidence. It is a relatively new approach for which a universal study definition or definitive procedure has not been established. The purpose of this scoping review was to provide an overview of scoping reviews in the literature. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted using the Arksey and O'Malley framework. A search was conducted in four biblio…

  • Evaluating area-level spatial clustering of SalmonellaEnteritidis infections and their socioeconomic determinants in the greater Toronto area, Ontario, Canada (2007 – 2009)

Open Access•Christine Vargas, Csaba Varga et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

Our study demonstrated that FSAs with high and low average median family income, medium proportion of visible minority population, and high average number of children at home per census family had the highest S. Enteritidis infection rates. These areas should be targeted when designing disease control and prevention programs. Future studies are needed in areas with high S. Enteritidis infection rates to identify sources of environmental contamina…

  • Pet husbandry and infection control practices related to zoonotic disease risks in Ontario, Canada

    Open Access•Jason W Stull, Andrew S Peregrine et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

The results suggest there is a need for education on zoonotic disease prevention practices for pet-owning households with individuals at higher risk of infection and those with high-risk species (e.g., reptiles). Further research is needed to determine the role of education in altering higher risk pet practices

  • Household knowledge, attitudes and practices related to pet contact and associated zoonoses in Ontario, Canada

    Open Access•Jason W Stull, Andrew S Peregrine et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

These results suggest that there is a need for accessible zoonotic disease information for both pet and non-owning households, with additional efforts made by veterinary, human and public health personnel. Immediate educational efforts directed toward households with individuals at higher risk to infections are especially needed

  • Knowledge translation and exchange in the Canadian microbial food safety system

    Open Access•Dianna Wolfe, Dianna M Wolfe et al.•ARTICLE•Food Policy•2012•Referencias: 2

  • A qualitative exploration of the perceptions and information needs of public health inspectors responsible for food safety

Open Access•Mai Pham, Mai T Pham et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

The information gathered from these focus groups can provide a basis for the development of resources that will meet the specific needs of public health inspectors involved in protecting and promoting food safety

  • Food consumption patterns in the Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada

Open Access•Andrea Nesbitt, Shannon E Majowicz et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2008

The demographics and lifestyles of Canadians are changing, thereby influencing food choices and food preparation in the home. Although different dietary practices are associated with increased risk of foodborne illness, our ability to evaluate food consumption trends and assess risks associated with foodborne illness is limited by lack of data on current eating habits and consumer food safety practices. The objective of this study was to describe…
