  • Conservation auctions for landscape-scale environmental management: Does spatial configuration matter for economic and ecological outcomes

    Open Access•Chi Nguyen, Uwe Latacz‐Lohmann et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2024•References: 4

How best to achieve spatially-coordinated environmental outcomes using reverse auctions has become a research question of growing interest. This paper makes a first attempt to systematically investigate the combined effects of the spatial configuration of landscape and landholder-to-landholder communication on auction performance in delivering landscape-scale environmental improvements. We provide novel insights into the importance of the regulat…

This paper argues that the current debate on sustainability is obscured by a number of misunderstandings. These relate, first, to the ongoing dispute between ecologists and economists holding different visions about the limits of economic growth and the carrying capacity of the Earth; and second, to the discrepancy between theoretical sustainability and practical sustainability. The paper concludes that the current vagueness surrounding sustainab…

  • Auctioning Conservation Contracts: A Theoretical Analysis and an Application

Open Access•Uwe Latacz‐Lohmann, Carel Van der Hamsvoort•ARTICLE•American Journal of Agricultural…•1997

Auction theory is used to analyze the potential benefits of auctions in allocating contracts for the provision of nonmarket goods in the countryside. A model of optimal bidding for conservation contracts is developed and applied to a hypothetical conservation program. Competitive bidding, compared to fixed‐rate payments, can increase the cost effectiveness of conservation contracting significantly. The cost revelation mechanism inherent in the bi…
