Developing a patient reported measure on out-of-pocket healthcare expenditure among Aboriginal patients: A formative study
Healthcare costs not subsidized by the government and are covered by patients, are known as out-of-pocket healthcare expenditure (OOPHE). In Australia, OOPHE disproportionately impacts Aboriginal households, particularly in rural and remote regions. Currently no patient reported measures (PRM) to assess OOPHE exist, despite being an identified priority in Aboriginal communities. This study developed and psychometrically evaluated (validity and te…
Barriers and Enablers to Supporting the Healthy Ageing Needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples Within Aged Care: A Qualitative Study
There is a growing understanding of how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia define healthy ageing. Little is known however about how aged care services can support their healthy ageing needs. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore community and service provider perspectives on how home‐based and residential aged care services can best support the healthy ageing needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples…
Using Citizen Science to Address Out-of-Pocket Healthcare Expenditure with Aboriginal Communities in the Far West of South Australia: A Protocol
Out-of-pocket health expenditure (OOPHE) significantly impacts people with chronic and complex diseases (CCDs) and injuries. Aboriginal communities experience a higher burden of CCDs and injury, along with greater OOPHE inequities. This project aims to develop and implement a social prescribing digital platform (Web App) to reduce OOPHE. It is grounded in citizen science approaches that value the lived experience and knowledge of Aboriginal peopl…
Hofmeyr: A Late Pleistocene Human Skull from South Africa
Exploring self-determined solutions to service and system challenges to promote social and emotional wellbeing in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people: A qualitative study
Introduction: study sought to understand challenges facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and identify solutions for the health and social service system to promote social and emotional wellbeing. Methods: This qualitative study applied Indigenous methodologies undertaken with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander governance and leadership. A respected local Aboriginal person engaged with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander c…

Health System Enablers and Barriers to Continuity of Care for First Nations Peoples Living with Chronic Disease
Health and social care should be harmonised with First Nations Peoples' cultural beliefs and family influences. Sustainable strategies require a co-design commitment for well-funded flexible care plans considering coaching and peer support across the lifespan
Ancient DNA and the European Neolithic: Relations and Descent
Assessing the quality of health research from an Indigenous perspective: The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander quality appraisal tool
Aboriginal community controlled health organisations address health equity through action on the social determinants of health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia
This study provides evidence of the considerable efforts of the ACCHO sector, as a primary health care provider, in addressing the social determinants of health and health inequity experienced by Indigenous communities. For the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population, ACCHOs not only have an essential role in addressing immediate healthcare needs but also invest in driving change in the more entrenched structural determinants of health. …

Neurocranial evolution in modern humans: The case of Jebel Irhoud 1
Jebel Irhoud 1 represents an almost complete cranium from the North African late Middle Pleistocene. Despite the good preservation of most of its anatomical regions, its phylogenetic position is still uncertain, particularly its relationship to the emergence of the modern human lineage. The present paper supplies a basic morphometric description and comparison of the endocast of Jebel Irhoud 1. The endocast's maximum width is large when compared …
Brains versus brawn: An empirical test of Barker's brain sparing model
The Barker model of the in utero origins of diminished muscle mass in those born small invokes the adaptive “sparing” of brain tissue development at the expense of muscle. Though compelling, to date this model has not been directly tested. This article develops an allometric framework for testing the principal prediction of the Barker model—that among those born small muscle mass is sacrificed to spare brain growth—then evaluates this hypothesis …
