  • Canadian Consumer Financial Vulnerability, Stress, and Well-Being

Matthew Brzozowski, Brenda Spotton Visano•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2023•References: 4

  • A comparison of recall and diary food expenditure data

    Open Access•Matthew Brzozowski, Thomas F Crossley et al.•ARTICLE•Food Policy•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Recall food expenditure data, which is the basis of a great deal of empirical work, is believed to suffer from considerable measurement error. Diary records are believed to be more accurate. We study an unusual data set that collects recall and diary data from the same households and so allows a direct comparison of the two methods of data collection. The diary data imply measurement errors in recall food expenditure data that are substantial, an…

  • Home Cooking, Food Consumption, and Food Production among Retired Canadian Households

    Matthew Brzozowski, Yuqian Lu•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2010•References: 2

Utilizing the 1996 Canadian Food Expenditure Survey matched with the Canadian Nutrient File, we attempt to differentiate between food consumption and the observed food expenditure among retired Canadians. We look at the effect of retirement on food expenditure, production, and consumption to test the universality of results obtained by Aguiar and Hurst (2005) from US data. In contrast to US results, conditional on a similar vector of covariates, …

  • Welfare Reforms and Consumption among Single Mother Households: Evidence from Canadian Provinces

    Matthew Brzozowski•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2007•Cited by: 1

This paper evaluates the impact of the 1995_1998 Ontario welfare reforms on the consumption levels of single mothers. I compare changes in after-tax income and in total expenditure among Ontario single mothers to those among three distinct segments of the Canadian population: single mothers in Quebec and British Columbia, single women with no children in Ontario, and married couples with children in Ontario. The comparison with demographically id…

  • Does One Size Fit All? The CPI and Canadian Seniors

    Matthew Brzozowski•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Policy•2006•Cited by: 2•References: 3

The paper shows that the consumer price index (CPI) is often a very poor measure of inflation rates relevant to individual senior households. A high proportion of the inflation rates measured by household-specific price indexes falls more than one percentage point above or below the CPI inflation rate. Moreover, I use the Engel method proposed by Hamilton and Costa and demonstrate that the CPI inflation rate overestimated the average inflation ra…
