  • Daily Life Encounters between the Byzantines and the Ottomans

    Open Access•Siren Çelik•ARTICLE•Belleten•2024

The Byzantines and the Ottomans were both rivals and neighbours. They were also in close cultural contact: they observed each other’s customs, clothing and food. Byzantine literary texts from this period, such as histories and dialogues on Christianity and Islam, are invaluable sources in this sphere, offering insight not only into these respective religions but also providing many instances of cultural encounters. This paper presents some vignet…

  • The crusade of Nicopolis and its aftermath

    Open Access•Siren Çelik•ARTICLE•Zbornik radova Vizantoloskog…•2023

The Crusade of Nicopolis (1396) was one of the last crusades directed against the Ottomans, led primarily by joint Franco-Burgundian and Hungarian forces. Albeit on the margins, the Byzantines and Emperor Manuel II Palaiologos were also involved in this crusading project as they hoped to relieve Constantinople from the Ottoman blockade it endured since 1394. The resounding defeat inflicted on the crusaders by the Ottomans was echoed in both Byzan…

  • II.

  • The emperor, the sultan and the scholar

    Open Access•Siren Çelik•ARTICLE•Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies•2017•Cited by: 1

This article will attempt to offer the first literary analysis of the Dialogue with a Persian of Manuel II Palaiologos. Despite its rich theological and literary material, this work has largely been neglected by scholars. However, the Dialogue deserves to be studied for its literary merit and not merely as a historical source. After a brief overview of the contents and background of the Dialogue , this study will focus on its literary features, e…
