• Human nature, objective social structure, and social reforms

    Jesús de Felipe Redondo•ARTICLE•Journal of Iberian & Latin…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This paper addresses the question of why labour legislation produces diverse, often opposing, responses among sectors of the population that apparently benefit from it. In particular, it explores the changes in the attitudes of unionized Spanish workers to the social reforms between 1870 and 1930. These workers had previously rejected state intervention in labour relations. Since 1870, most continued without calling for social laws, but occasiona…

Focusing on the Spanish case, this article addresses two fundamental questions: why were many unionized workers sceptical about state intervention in labour issues throughout the nineteenth century, and why did this attitude begin to change from the 1860s onwards? Its main thesis is that workers’ attitudes derived ultimately from different historical notions of ‘society’ that shaped their perceptions and experiences of labour relations and their …

    Jesús de Felipe Redondo•ARTICLE•Critical Historical Studies•2014•References: 10

This article focuses on the relationship between the labor movement and the state in Spain. Its main object of analysis is unionized Spanish workers’ indifference or hostility to state intervention in labor relations during the period when the first set of social reforms was discussed and implemented (1880–1923). The article shows that unionized workers’ and reformist politicians’ contradictory attitudes toward social reforms derived from their i…
