  • Connecting Guarani Culture to Space—An Intangible Heritage in the Solar System Science and Education Framework

    Open Access•Jesús Martínez‐Frías, Estelvina Rodríguez-Portillo et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2025

Humanity is opening up to cosmos in all its dimensions and areas of knowledge. In this context, Paraguay, due to its multicultural uniqueness and two official languages (Spanish and Guaraní), represents an emblematic example of how legends, traditions and its rich mythology are important in their sociocultural translation to space. They coexist as a link between the past and the future. Guarani traditions, mythology, their relationship with natur…

  • Geology of Lanzarote's northern region (Canary Island, Spain)

Open Access•Ilaria Tomasi, Matteo Tonello et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2023

This work presents a detailed volcano-geological map of the Northern region of Lanzarote (Canary Islands, Spain). This map is a synthesis of gathered and interpreted field data and geological maps. We have integrated information obtained from: (a) detailed geological field surveys, (b) high-resolution digital elevation models (DTMs), (c) aerial orthophotographs, (d) morphometric analysis of eruptive deposits and volcanic structure (i.e. lava tube…

  • Khettaras in the Tafilalet oasis (Morocco)

    Open Access•Mohamed Beraaouz, Mohamed Abioui et al.•ARTICLE•Built Heritage•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 7

The khettaras constitute a hydraulic system for mobilising water by gravity from the water table to the surface to irrigate fields in oases. This system, which has been fairly widespread in North Africa, in particular in Algeria ( foggara ) and Morocco ( khettaras ), was introduced several centuries ago in the oases of southeastern Morocco and has continued to operate despite various natural and anthropic constraints. Based on these ingenious and…

  • Isotope and trace element evolution of the naica aquifer (Chihuahua, Mexico) over the past 60,000 yr revealed by speleothems

    Open Access•Fernando Gázquez, Jos"-Mar"a Calaforra et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2013

The “espada” speleothems of Cueva de las Espadas (Naica Mine, Chihuahua, Mexico) comprise a high-purity selenite core overlain by successive deposits of calcite, gypsum and aragonite. Gypsum precipitated under water from a hydrothermal solution (~ 58°C) when the water table was above the cave level ca. 57 ka, during the last glaciation, and some intervals during deglaciation and the Holocene. Aragonite was deposited at lower temperatures (~ 26°C)…

  • The Iberian fireball of 4 January 2004

    Jesus Martinez-Frias, Jesús Martínez‐Frías et al.•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinary Science Reviews•2004

According to the American Meteor Society, 'fireball' is a term for a very bright meteor, generally brighter than magnitude -3 or -4, which is about the same magnitude as the planet Venus viewed in the morning or evening sky. If the fireball explodes in a bright terminal flash, which typically extinguishes with visible fragmentation, it is then known as a 'bolide', from the Greek word for a throwing spear. This paper describes the circumstances of…
