Fifty Years of McCall Glacier Research
McCall Glacier, located in the eastern Brooks Range of northern Alaska (Fig. 1), has the longest and most com-plete history of scientific research of any glacier in the U.S. Arctic. Spanning the period from the International
To the Pole
The Polar Oceans Program of the Alaska SAR Facility
The science plan for the Alaska SAR Facility (ASF) focuses on earth surface characteristics that are of interest within the overall concept of global change and that show significant regional, seasonal and interannual variations resulting in changes in the strength of their radar returns. The polar oceans, with the continuous motion and deformation of the pack ice and the changes in the surface state of the surrounding open seas, offer excellent …
Oil in the Arctic 2. The Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Assessment Program
Petroleum exploration and development is proceeding rapidly in the ice-covered waters of the arctic continental shelves. A a consequence of this development, environmental catastrophes on an unprecedented scale are possible in this harsh yet sensitive environment, where the cleanup of spilled oil is extremely difficult, if not virtually impossible. What are the likely damages to the arctic marine ecosystem which will result from petroleum-related…
Polar meteorology
The general large-scale circulation of the global atmosphere has its basic driving mechanism in the equator-poleward temperature gradients in both hemispheres. It has become increasingly obvious over the last few decades that to understand and predict the behaviour of the atmosphere at any point, it is essential to understand the behaviour of the total global fluid system. The Global Atmospheric Research Project (GARP) is an outcome of this recog…
The Tundra Microclimate During Snow-Melt at Barrow, Alaska
The microclimate of the tundra during spring of 1971 (29 May to 17 June) at Barrow, is described and analysed in terms of the heat balance at the terrestrial surface and the effects of terrain parameters on the heat balance components. Changes through the snow-melting period are large. Within 2 weeks, 35 cm of snow are removed, soil interface temperatures increase by 15°C and the dry snow environment is replaced by a saturated water-soaked tundra…
