From Intonation Adjustments to Synchronization of Heart Rate Variability
This paper is concerned with how singers of Georgian traditional vocal music interact when singing together. Applying a variety of computational methods from audio signal processing and music information retrieval (MIR), we examine three existing corpora of (field) recordings for manifestations of a high degree of mutual coordination of the singers’ voices. We find numerous examples of harmonically controlled mutual intonation adjustments on both…
Tuning Systems of Traditional Georgian Singing Determined from a New Corpus of Field Recordings
In this study we examine the tonal organization of the 2016 GVM dataset, a newly-created corpus of high-quality multimedia field recordings of traditional Georgian singing with a focus on Svaneti. For this purpose, we developed a new processing pipeline for the computational analysis of non-western polyphonic music which was subsequently applied to the complete 2016 GVM dataset. To evaluate under what conditions a single tuning system is represen…
Investigating style evolution of Western classical music
In musicology, there has been a long debate about a meaningful partitioning and description of music history regarding composition styles. Particularly, concepts of historical periods have been criticized since they cannot account for the continuous and interwoven evolution of style. To systematically study this evolution, large corpora are necessary suggesting the use of computational strategies. This article presents such strategies and experim…
A swingogram representation for tracking micro-rhythmic variation in jazz performances
A typical micro-rhythmic trait of jazz performances is their ‘swing feel.’ According to several studies, uneven eighth notes contribute decisively to this perceived quality. In this paper we analyze the swing ratio (beat-upbeat ratio) implied by the drummer on the ride cymbal. Extending previous work, we propose a new method for semi-automatic swing ratio estimation based on pattern recognition in onset sequences. As a main contribution, we intro…
A Cross-Version Chord Labelling Approach for Exploring Harmonic Structures—A Case Study on Beethoven's Appassionata
In this paper, we present a case study on Beethoven's Appassionata in order to demonstrate how computer-based methods may assist a musicologist when performing harmonic analyses. As the main conceptual contribution, we introduce a simple yet powerful paradigm that exploits the availability of different versions (recorded performances, score) of the same piece of music to stabilize and enrich the chord labelling process. As a result, we obtain a v…
A Multimodal Way of Experiencing and Exploring Music
Significant digitization efforts have resulted in large multimodal music collections, which comprise music-related documents of various types and formats including text, symbolic data, audio, image, and video. The challenge is to organize, understand, and search musical content in a robust, efficient, and intelligent manner. Key issues concern the development of methods for analysing, correlating, and annotating the available multimodal material,…
