  • Impact of climate change on snowpack and avalanches in Slovenia

    Open Access•Blaž Komac, Matija Zorn•ARTICLE•Geographia Polonica•2023

The article discusses avalanche occurrence in the Slovenian Alps (SE Alps) in the context of climate change. It analyses the relationship between the North Atlantic Oscillation and maximum snow depth over the last two centuries, and the relationships between maximum snow depth and avalanches over the last three decades. We argue that higher temperatures lead to precipitation in the form of rain at higher elevations even in winter, so that major w…

  • Endonyms and Exonyms

Open Access•Drago Perko, Matjaž Geršič et al.•CHAPTER•International Encyclopedia of…•2022

Endonyms, together with exonyms, form toponyms or geographical names, which are the proper names of geographical features and part of the world's cultural heritage. An endonym is the native name of a geographical feature and is used by the local community, whereas an exonym is a foreign name for the same feature and is used by an external community if it differs from an endonym. The study of toponyms and their origins, meanings, use, and typology…

  • Ice Caves

Open Access•Matej Lipar, Matija Zorn et al.•CHAPTER•International Encyclopedia of…•2021

Ice caves are caves in rock with perennial ice accumulation. They differ from glacier caves, which are caves formed in ice. They can occur at higher elevations and higher latitudes, where the mean annual surface air temperature is below freezing, but the majority are found in regions with a mean annual surface air temperature above freezing, owing their existence merely to a particular cave microclimate. Such microclimates are responsible for zon…

  • Erozijski procesi v slovenski Istri

    Open Access•Matija Zorn•BOOK•Erozijski procesi v slovenski Istri•2009

The book deals with erosion processes in the Slovenian part of Istrian peninsula. In the introductory chapters the fluvial-denudation relief in Slovenia, erosion processes, and their influential factors, as well as the extent of erosion processes in Slovenia and Slovene Istria are presented. The largest section of the book is devoted to the presentation of measurements of erosion processes in the Dragonja river basin. Measurements included soil e…

  • Geomorfologija in prostorsko planiranje

    Open Access•Matija Zorn, Blaž Komac•ARTICLE•Urbani izziv•2006
