Decoding free-throw accuracy
This study examined the key biomechanical determinants of free-throw accuracy by comparing 2D kinematic characteristics between trained basketball athletes and novice players. Fifty right-hand dominant participants (25 athletes, 25 novices; age 18–24 years) performed 20 standardized free-throw trials after familiarization. Upper and lower-limb joint angles, trunk lean, hand velocity, and ball-release parameters (height, angle, velocity) were extr…
Rupture or continuity? The evolving Australian approach to the Five Power Defence Arrangements from Gorton to Whitlam
The Whitlam Government’s decision in 1973 to withdraw Australian forces from Malaysia and Singapore has been regarded by some researchers as an act of disengagement with devastating effects for Australia’s regional engagement. Realism in Whitlam’s Foreign Policy
Internationalism and nationalism are the two of the most dominant approaches scholars use to analyse Whitlam’s foreign policy. Both internationalism and nationalism are characteristically s…
To Dust Off the Cobwebs’
The Whitlam Government’s efforts to revoke the London-based Privy Council’s ability to hear appeals on the decisions of Australian courts constituted a significant chapter in paving the way for Australia’s final judicial independence. The significance of this issue was also reinforced by its serving as the point where Australia’s internal politics became inseparably intertwined with its British connection. To untie this historical knot left over …
Shifting Interests
This article focuses on the interaction between the Australian and British governments during the early 1970s over French nuclear testing in the South Pacific. It examines the considerations behind the Australian government's approach to Britain, and Britain's response to initiatives from Australia. Through the presentation of a case study demonstrating how Australia's Pacific interests and Britain's European concerns inevitably led to different …
A Diplomatic Tightrope
This article focuses on Australia's response to the joint Anglo-American effort to expand military facilities on the island of Diego Garcia in early 1970s. The primary emphasis will be on the Whitlam government's rationale behind its diplomatic manoeuvre towards great power rivalries in the Indian Ocean and its supportive position towards the concept of building the Indian Ocean as a peace zone. It argues that the Whitlam government's policy towa…
