Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the advertising industry: Attitudes and behaviors
Advertising professionals face a complex socio-political landscape in which diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) campaigns can engage marginalized audiences but risk alienating conservatives. Given the issue of diversity underrepresentation in advertising research in non-Western countries and the questionable effectiveness of promoting DEI, the present research, which is based on data from Israel, examines advertising professionals’ intentions …
Vive la résistance: A boomerang effect of resisting incentivized eWOM on consumer trust
Incentivizing consumers to share product recommendations and other forms of eWOM (electronic word of mouth) with their social media friends has become a prevalent promotional strategy among marketers. However, could this strategy potentially backfire? Adopting a metacognitive perspective, we suggest that this approach adversely affects those consumers who reject the incentive and resist sharing the message. We hypothesize that for individuals who…
Explaining Consumer Responses to Ethnic and Religious Minorities in Advertising: The Case of Israel and Germany
With global geopolitical changes, marketers have increasingly employed advertisements featuring ethnic and religious minority endorsers. Researchers have examined the effects of this practice, where endorsers’ ethnicity and religious associations are interlinked. The present research disentangles the potential effects of these two factors and tests their underlying mechanism. Study 1 (N = 336) shows that the endorser’s belongingness to a religiou…
Visual Size Matters: The Effect of Product Depiction Size on Calorie Estimates
Consumers' calorie estimates are often biased and inaccurate. Even the presence of relevant nutritional information may not suffice to prevent consumer biases in calorie estimation. The current work demonstrates across two studies that visual cues given by larger product depictions lead to increased calorie estimates. Further, it demonstrates that these effects occur even when consumers are given, and notice, information about product quantity. T…

Design/methodology/approach Data were collected through a web-based survey on seven major digital communication channels. ANOVA was applied in order to analyz…
