Responding to the ‘small’
The interface of the other
In this article, we investigate the ethical conditions of online education by extending Levinas’ concept of the ‘face’. Considering the ‘face’ of the other raises the question of what it is we see when communicating online—is it the face of the other, or something else? How does this perception constitute the other for ‘me’? Can we access the ethical dimension of experience in online communication? To describe the ‘face’ we encounter in online ed…
“Society is the present of teaching”
In this paper, Katja Castillo approaches the phenomenon of teaching through an analysis of Emmanuel Levinas's unedited conference notes titled “Les nourritures,” “Les enseignements,” and “L'écrit et l'oral.” Levinas's thinking prior to the publication of his major works provides an entry point to his philosophy. In this light Castillo interprets his conference notes as laying the groundwork for the argument he develops later in Totality and Infin…
Conserving the dignity of teaching through ethics as ‘ mise en question ’
In this article, we examine Emmanuel Levinas’ understanding of ethics through a conceptual analysis of ethics as ‘mise en question’. We contribute our perspective to the conversation on the Levinasian approach to education provoked by Alistair Miller, Soyoung Lee and Paul Standish. Through a systematic reading of Levinas’ texts as well as his unedited notes, we formulate a stance to support Levinasian ethics in the context of education. We argue …
Kokemus toisesta ja kesto Bergsonin filosofiassa
Liittyessään kaikkeen inhimilliseen kokemukseen keston käsite liittyy myös välttämättä kokemukseen toisesta henkilöstä. Tätä näkökulmaa Bergsonin kokemuksen konstituution hahmottamisesta on kuitenkin tutkittu vähän. Kysymys kuuluu, voisiko Bergsonin keston käsitteellä luonnehtia kokemusta toisesta henkilöstä juuri toisena eri tavoin, kuin miten tilallisuuteen tai kehollisuuteen keskittyvät analyysit sitä kuvaavat. Argumentoimme, että Bergsonin ke…
