  • Student authored atlas tours (story maps) as geography assignments

Richard Treves, Damien Mansell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography in Higher…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 11

Atlas Tours consist of collections of animated maps and other elements woven together to make a narrative, they are a commonly used format on the web. Recent developments in software platforms such as Esri Story Maps have made producing them possible by Geography students. The study uses student written feedback and focuses groups about a module where students produce an Atlas Tour as an assignment. This is used to advocate the use of student-pro…

  • What path and how fast? The effect of flight time and path on user spatial understanding in map tour animations

Richard Treves, Artemis Skarlatidou•ARTICLE•Cartography and Geographic…•2017•Cited by: 1

GIScience scholars have identified map tours as an important visualization type for communicating spatial information: map tours are animations where the virtual camera moves through space and are common on the web, mobile devices, and television. Understanding how to enhance their effectiveness is timely because of recent, growing interest in virtual reality and animated map presentation tools such as Esri Story MapsTM and Google EarthTM tours. …

  • Footprints in the sky: Using student track logs from a “bird's eye view” virtual field trip to enhance learning

Richard Treves, Paolo Viterbo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography in Higher…•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Research into virtual field trips (VFTs) started in the 1990s but, only recently, the maturing technology of devices and networks has made them viable options for educational settings. By considering an experiment, the learning benefits of logging the movement of students within a VFT are shown. The data are visualized by two techniques: “animated path maps” are dynamic animations of students' movement in a VFT; “paint spray maps” show where stud…

  • Challenges in the Reuse of Learning Materials: Technical Lessons from the Delivery of an Online GIS MSc Module

Jim Wright, Richard Treves et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Geography in Higher…•2009•References: 2

Programme delivery through consortia of institutions, each contributing different areas of expertise, is seen as one solution to the teaching challenges posed by increasing subject\nspecialization within academic departments. For the institutions within such consortia, this may mean that specialist modules will be delivered to multiple streams of students from different\ninstitutions, backgrounds, and possibly even countries. This paper draws on …
