A Statistical Method for the Identification of Spatial Clusters
A method is presented for the identification and location of clusters in data reported in small areal units. The areal units are aggregated into zones which are not prespecified at the outset and which may be of any shape or size. A statistical distribution is described against which any apparent clusters in the zones can be assessed for statistical significance. Monte Carlo methods are used to derive the distribution, and it is argued that compl…
In search of the differential shift
How fieldwork has been successfully incorporated into a programme of industrial geography at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle is demonstrated. The theme of shift‐share analysis has been used to integrate the lecture programme, seminar work, field study and an assignment. The work has proved challenging to the students and some of the resulting written work has been of high quality. The fieldwork was identified by the students as a parti…
The Mapping of Small-Area Census Data-A Consideration of the Role of Enumeration District Boundaries
Census enumeration districts (EDs) are not 'natural' areal units, and a strong presumption exists against their use for cartographic or analytical purposes. There is, however, some reason to suppose that their boundaries may coincide with divisions in the underlying social geography of an area, and that they therefore contain information which should not be lost in processing. A study of Newcastle upon Tyne EDs shows that ED boundaries do not, in…
