  • Waking the “sleeping giant?” Mid- to Late-Holocene environment and fire history in the Aitape area, northern Papua New Guinea

    Open Access•M Golitko, Mitchell J Power et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2024•References: 15

The coastlines of the southwestern Pacific are dynamic environments that have been repeatedly reshaped by tectonic forces as well as changing global climate and sea level. It has been theorized that much of the north coast of New Guinea was sparsely inhabited until stabilization of coastal flats fallowing the Mid-Holocene Thermal Maximum and resulting marine high stand. We report on environmental proxy indicators measured in core samples taken ne…

  • The value of New Guinea in regional and global archaeological enquiry

    Open Access•Jason Kariwiga•ARTICLE•Australian Archaeology•2024•References: 1

The island of New Guinea, once the northern frontier of the Pleistocene continent of Sahul, remains an underrepresented region for archaeological research today. This is undoubtedly the case when compared to Australia, the other half of that giant continent. The reasons for this vary and are numerous and are for another time, however, it stands that this imbalance impacts the way New Guinea is represented within our discipline. This disparity is som…

  • A contextualised review of genomic evidence for gene flow events between Papuans and Indigenous Australians in Cape York, Queensland

    Open Access•Sally Wasef, G D Wrobel et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2021

  • Rock art and long-distance prehistoric exchange behavior

Roxanne Tsang, William Pleiber et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Island and Coastal…•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 9

Since 1909, patrol officers, anthropologists, archaeologists, and others have identified evidence of a pre-contact trading network linking New Guinea with the Torres Strait. Current research in the Lower Sepik River Basin reported various ethnographic descriptions relating to cultural material objects stenciled on various rock art sites in Auwim, Upper Karawari-Arafundi region, East Sepik, Papua New Guinea (PNG). In addition to the rock art, the …

  • Obsidian from the Jacquinot Bay area, East New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea

Open Access•Jim Specht, Jason Kariwiga et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Pacific Archaeology•2018

The paper describes the analysis by portable XRF (pXRF) of 44 pieces of obsidian from six archaeological sites around Jacquinot Bay in the Pomio District of East New Britain, Papua New Guinea. One piece is possibly from a middle Lapita pottery context, but the remainder are undated but almost certainly post-Lapita in age. The pXRF analysis attributes all pieces to New Britain sources: 41 from Mopir and 3 from Willaumez Peninsula. The dominance of…

  • Archaeological and Palaeoenviromental Investigations Near Aitape, Northern Papua New Guinea, 2014

Open Access•M Golitko, Ethan E Cochrane et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Pacific Archaeology•2016

The mid-Holocene period (ca. 7000–3000 BP) in the southwestern Pacific witnessed the activation of wide-ranging networks connecting the north coast of New Guinea and off-shore islands, possibly driven by rising population density as favourable coastal environments developed after the mid-Holocene marine highstand. Yet finding actual evidence for human occupation dating to this period in New Guinea has proven extremely challenging. We report on th…
