    Open Access•Sina Arnold, Sebastian Bischoff•ARTICLE•Memory Studies•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 15

In this article, we apply Michael Rothberg’s concept of “multidirectional memory” to an empirical setting, by analyzing qualitative interviews with 124 educators in the field of memory work, such as museum and memorial site employees, teachers, volunteers of non-governmental organizations, and civil society initiatives. We analyzed where they come across memory conflicts and commonality, and what the respective “enabling conditions” were, that is…

    Sebastian Bischoff•ARTICLE•Geschichte und Gesellschaft•2022

This article traces the career of the West German jurist Manfred Roeder, who went from evangelicalism and resistance to left-wing Protestantism to become a central conservative-nationalistic actor against “perversion” and the “porn wave” in 1970. In his militant activism he rapidly left the Christian frame of reference; his path led him to antisemitism, historical revisionism, and right-wing terrorism. The study ofRoeder can serve as a probe into…

  • ‘The independence of Belgium is forfeited.’ Narratives of legitimation in the annexation debates of the German war public, 1914–1918

    Sebastian Bischoff•ARTICLE•First World War Studies•2020

Early in the war, anti-Belgian ideas were already occupying a central place among the German public’s images of the enemy. These were created within a very short time frame and drew upon stories of the alleged bestial expulsions of German nationals by Belgian citizens, supposedly organized by the state authorities and the purportedly cruel warfare conducted by Belgian civilians against German troops. At the same time, the question of Belgian neut…
