Exploring Unconventional 3D Geovisualization Methods for Land Suitability Assessment
Effective management of urban development requires robust decision-support tools, including land suitability analysis and its visual communication. This study introduces and evaluates seven 3D geovisualization methods—Horizontal Planes, Point Cloud, 3D Surface, Vertical Planes, 3D Graduated Symbols, Prism Map, and Voxels—for visualizing land suitability for residential development in Jihlava, Czechia. Using five raster-based data layers derived f…
Exploring Cartographic Differences in Web Map Applications
Although there are many articles dealing with web map applications, they often focus on just one or a few applications. Several articles deal with the technical solution of the applications, but relatively few are focused on the cartographic aspects of these applications. This article evaluates eight web mapping applications based on six cartographic aspects: map key, map scale, map layout, navigation elements, labels, and analytical tools. The o…
Linking the quality of life index and the typology of European administrative units
In recent decades, research into the quality of life has been carried out by scientists and political organizations. This article follows the European Union's call for a multidimensional approach to research into the quality of life. The article puts forward a novel concept for the quality of life, based on key domains and their respective indicators, as described in the available statistical data. Using multidimensional statistical methods, a sy…
The Importance of School World Atlases According to Czech Geography Teachers
Over 600 geography teachers answered an online survey containing 30 questions about school world atlases, an integral part of geography education. The study measured the importance and frequency of use of atlases, identified the most frequently used school atlases, and determined the type of tasks solved with atlases and the supplementary teaching aids used. The authors analysed the individual responses of teachers and investigated the relationsh…

Automatic Geodata Processing Methods for Real-World City Visualizations in Cities
The city-building game Cities: Skylines simulates urban-related processes in a visually appealing 3D environment and thus offers interesting possibilities for visualizations of real-world places. Such visualizations could be used for presentation, participation, or education projects. However, the creation process of the game model from geographical data is inaccurate, complicated, and time consuming, thus preventing the wider use of this game fo…
Differences in Thematic Map Reading by Students and Their Geography Teacher
A school world atlas is likely the first systematic cartographic product which students encounter in their lives. However, only a few empirical studies have analysed school atlases in the context of map reading and learning geographical curricula. The present paper describes an eye-tracking study conducted on 30 grammar school students and their geography teacher. The study explored ten tasks using thematic world maps contained in the Czech schoo…
Developing Versatile Graphic Map Load Metrics
Graphic map load is a property of a map quantifying the amount of map content. It indicates the visual complexity of the map and helps cartographers to adapt maps and other geospatial visualizations to accomplish their purpose. Generally, map design needs to enable the user to quickly, comprehensively, and intuitively obtain the relevant spatial information from a map. Especially, this applies in cases like crisis management, immunology and milit…
Forest vulnerability zones in the Czech Republic
The accompanying Main Map shows forest vulnerability zones calculated for the Czech Republic, covering a total area of almost 79,000 km2. Calculating forest vulnerability zones over such a large area requires a unique approach due to its complexity. The map includes additional information on forest areas and topography. The model of forest vulnerability zones (FVZ) constitutes an alternative to existing zones of forest health hazard caused by emi…
Climatic regions of the Czech Republic
The map created represents the result of an application of Quitt's Climate Classification to a dataset of climatic characteristics of the Czech Republic from 1961 to 2000. The Quitt's climatic classification is based on dividing a territory into climate regions (units) according to complex climatological characteristics. These units represent specified classes defined by the combination of values of 14 climatological characteristics. All units ar…
Development of Olomouc city in 1930–2009
The paper and the maps deal with analysis of Olomouc city development that was based on GIS processing. The first step of the following analysis was digitization of all city plans created in the twentieth century. The new city plan that is going to be finalized in 2011 was also included in this analysis. Altogether four city plans from 1930, 1955, 1985 and 1999 were collected, digitized and analyzed. The main result of this work is a set of maps …
