What Motivates Multilingual Children and Youth to Read? A Systematic Review of the Research
Latent profile analysis reveals heterogeneity related to motivation, effort, and outside of class behaviors in digital environments among Chinese university students
Age and Disclosure of Medical, Mental Health, and Learning Differences to Faculty
This study compares experiences of traditional-aged college students (≤ 24) to nontraditional-aged students (≥ 25) in disclosing medical and mental health problems or learning differences to faculty. Two studies representing qualitative (Study 1; n = 39) and quantitative (Study 2; n = 190) data were collected from participants attending two different 4-year public universities. Nontraditional-aged students used the strategy of practical focus/obt…
It takes two to make a thing go write
The current study examined self-reported first language (Spanish) language reading and writing ability and behavior and relationships with digit span and stroop task performance. A battery of assessments and questionnaires was administered to 81 sequential Spanish-English bilingual university students in the U.S., for whom the sole language of education is English. Hierarchical regression models revealed self-reported amount of Spanish used for a…
Closing the enjoyment gap
Research demonstrates strong associations between psychosocial factors (motivation, attitudes, beliefs), outside of class behavior, and second language (L2) learning, particularly reading achievement [Briggs and Walter 2016 Briggs, J. G., and C. Walter. 2016. Read On! Extensive Reading and Young Second Language Learners’ Motivation and Attitudes.[Crossref] , [Google Scholar]. Read On! Extensive Reading and Young Second Language Learners’ Motivati…
Phonetic discrimination, phonological awareness, and pre-literacy skills in Spanish–English dual language preschoolers
The current study explores variation in phonemic representation among Spanish–English dual language learners (DLLs, n = 60) who were dominant in English or in Spanish. Children were given a phonetic discrimination task with speech sounds that: 1) occur in English and Spanish, 2) are exclusive to English, and 3) are exclusive to Russian, during Fall (age m = 57 months) and Spring (age m = 62 months, n = 42). In Fall, English-dominant DLLs discrimi…
Latent Class Analysis Reveals Distinct Groups Based on Executive Function and Socioemotional Traits, Developmental Conditions, and Stuttering
Exploring knowledge of transparent and non-transparent multi-word phrases among L2 English learners living in an Anglophone setting
Associations between stuttering, comorbid conditions and executive function in children
Present findings suggest that comorbidity is a common feature in CWS. Stuttering and comorbid conditions negatively impact EF
Unifying the current self, ideal self, attributions, self-authenticity, and intended effort
‘Mental Workouts for Couch Potatoes’
Research has yet to reach a definitive consensus on whether or how bilingualism confers benefits on Executive Function (EF): numerous studies show an EF advantage for bilinguals over monolinguals, while others indicate no significant differences. These inconsistencies demonstrate that the mechanisms behind a potential bilingualism-to-EF relationship remain unclear. Multiple factors likely impact EF outcomes among bilinguals, including proficiency…
Disclosing accommodation needs
Despite increased access, students with disabilities in higher education face barriers and report greater dissatisfaction than peers without disabilities [Mullins and Preyde 2013; Strnadová, Hájková, and Květoňová 2015]. Many U.S. institutions require students to present faculty with documentation prior to receiving academic accommodations; qualitative research indicates that this process of disclosing and requesting accommodations is uncomfortab…
Exploring variation in reading comprehension among young adult Spanish–English bilinguals
Aims: The goal of this study was to investigate diversity among Spanish–English bilingual university-level students’ reading outcomes and the impact of reading attitudes, motivation, and variation in language environment. Design: The current study included 50 Spanish–English bilingual undergraduate students, mean age 21.8 years, from a university in the western United States. Participants were administered a battery of standardized assessments in…
A Handbook for Practitioners
0 I was glad to find that the Handbook for Practitioners was not just another how-to text for teachers; it is rather a compilation of materials on all aspects of Rhode Island International Institute's ESL/literacy program, including a discussion of the process that the authors went through in implementing the program. They report evenly about program successes and failures and discuss how hiring circumstances caused them to reshape the program de…
