Danes Say No – and Yes
When its voters turned down the Maastricht Treaty in 1992, Denmark became the first among today’s EU member states to cast a No vote in a referendum on Euro‐ pean integration. With nine such votes, Denmark has held more referendums on EC/EU matters than any country bar Ireland. Of these, six have resulted in a Yes, while three have produced a No. This article analyses and discusses the role of referendums in Danish EU polit‐ ics and their impact,…
Back to the 1960s or Further Back? Brexit as a European Dilemma between Past and Future
To be or not to be . . . European' seems to be an ever present British dilemma. When they are in, they want to get out, and when they are out, they wantor needto get in. That has been true in times of both war and peace and reflects the fact that Europe may not be liked and embraced easily by the British, although it constitutes a fate that Albion cannot easily avoid. Tango for Thule
On 21 January 1968 a U.S. B-52 bomber armed with four 1.1-megaton thermonuclear bombs crashed into the ice in Wolstenholme Fjord some ten kilometers southwest of the Thule Airbase in northwest Greenland. The conventional high explosives in the bombs went off on impact, but thanks to the inbuilt safety system no nuclear detonation occurred. However, the crash caused a diplomatic crisis for the U.S. and Danish governments. This article analyzes how…
On the side of the angels
Based on a theoretical definition of altruism the article investigates the relationship between this and other motives in Danish official development assistance 1960–2005. In the historical unfolding and general mode of operation of the Danish aid regime altruism has been an important, but only vaguely specified motive, endorsed by those involved on all levels: politicians, interest groups, specialists, activists and voters. However, other import…
