  • Evidence of animal exploitation from the Roman and Late Antique sites in the modern city of Čačak, Serbia

Open Access•Mladen Mladenović, Katarina Dmitrović et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026

Although archaeozoology of the Roman period and Late Antiquity is still a relatively young discipline in Serbia, it has gained increasing momentum in recent decades. Despite this progress, data from Western Serbia remain scarce, with only limited published evidence so far. In the last few years, however, systematic analyses of archaeofaunal assemblages from the wider area of present-day Čačak have been initiated, encompassing three contexts: the …

  • Medieval nested cup weights from rudnik

Open Access•Dejan Radičević, Ana Cicovic et al.•ARTICLE•Starinar•2025•References: 1

During archaeological excavations on Mount Rudnik in 2017, a set of nested cup weights was discovered. According to their typological characteristics, as well as the archaeological context in which they were found, they could be dated to the 15th century. Weights were basic instruments in various forms of trade and, thanks to their form, they became a portable tool, suitable for carrying in a bag. They are distinguished by their thoughtful design…

  • A new interpretation of prince Lazar’s “tipar” from the Rudnik mountain

    Open Access•Dejan Radičević, Ana Cicovic•ARTICLE•Starinar•2021

This paper offers a new interpretation of an object found on the Rudnik mountain in 2015. On its first public presentation, it was defined as a tipar (seal die) of the Serbian prince Lazar. However, a new reading of its inscription revealed a detail that demonstrates that it is not a seal die but an object with a different purpose. It is a mould (matrix) which would have been used for the fabrication of a medallion (plaquette) on the bottom of a …

  • Seal-die of Prince Lazar from Rudnik

    Open Access•Dejan Radičević, Ana Cicovic•ARTICLE•Starinar•2016

The medieval settlement on the Rudnik Mountain was established, most probably, in the final decades of the 13th century. Soon it evolved into one of the best known mining and commercial centres in the Serbian state and reached its peak during the 14th and in the first half of the 15th century. The importance of Rudnik in the medieval period is confirmed by numerous material traces in the field. The most important discoveries in the course of arch…

  • Porphyrogenitus` borders on Ister and Hungarian conquest period finds in Vojvodina

    Open Access•Dejan Radičević, Perica Špehar•ARTICLE•Zbornik radova Vizantoloskog…•2015

Data from De administrando imperio covers Hungarian conquest, right after their arrival to the Carpathian plain and to the territories they settled. In order to describe the area of their inhabitance, author used well known facts and clear geographical marks. Territory defined in that manner encompassed modern Vojvodina, so an opinion was brought out in scientific literature that it was also included in the area of early Hungarian inhabitance. Ho…

  • Periodization of late medieval necropolis in the Lower Serbian Danube Basin

    Open Access•Dejan Radičević•ARTICLE•Starinar•2008

Most of the necropolis investigated in the Lower Danube basin have been generally dated between the 12th and 14th centuries. However, the grave finds indicate that there are significant differences between certain necropolis and against that background it is apparent that they could not date from the same time period. The main characteristic of the necropolis in Korbovo Vajuga and Prahovo are numerous bracelets and various variants of the earring…

  • The periodisation of IX-XI century necropoles in the lower Serbian Danube river basin

    Open Access•Dejan Radičević•ARTICLE•Starinar•2007

It is extremely difficult to periodise the IX-XI century necropoles in the lower Serbian Danube river basin because not enough research has been done on them. Our knowledge is mainly limited to individual graves or to graveyards that have partly been investigated. An examination of the necropolis in Grabovica provided most of the data for establishing the chronology for the graves in Mihajlovac and Prahovo. Besides finds that were identical to th…
