  • Ïntre lumi şi între epoci. Mormântul unui călăreţ războinic în sud-estul Transilvaniei./ Between worlds and between ages. A raider burial in south-eastern Transylvania

  • Înmormântări din situl arheologic de la Cetățeni./ Burials in the archaeological site from Cetățeni

  • The Spur From Valea Stânii. On Horses and Men in the Early Iron Age Ferigile Group

    Open Access•Dragoș Măndescu•ARTICLE•Dacia. Revue d’archéologie et…•2024

A find made at the end of 2020 excavation season in the Early Iron Age necropolis (Ferigile group) from Valea Stânii (Argeș County, Romania), in the immediate proximity of barrow 22 (second half of the 6th century BC), seems to reveal one of the earliest spurs, if not the earliest, from Europe. A comparative discussion on the earliest spurs from different Iron Age European cultures brings arguments in this regard. The paper focuses on the burials…

  • A singing Celtic lady in Oltenia? Unravelling an intricate find near Zătreni (Vâlcea county, Romania)

Open Access•Dragoș Măndescu, Ion Tuţulescu et al.•ARTICLE•Starinar•2024•References: 7

This article introduces an interesting discovery made with a metal detector at the end of 2020, on the left bank of the Olte? river, near Z?treni, V?lcea County. Judging by the recovered grave goods (among which a belt and a fibula, and probably also elements of a wind instrument stand out), kept today by ?Aurelian Sacerdo?eanu? V?lcea County Museum in R?mnicu V?lcea, and from the observations at the find location, it appears that it was very lik…

  • Reconstructing elites in Late Hallstatt Ferigile group

    Open Access•Dragoș Măndescu•ARTICLE•PLURAL History Culture Society•2022•References: 4

The paper tries to answer the question of whether elites existed and how these expressed themselves in the communities of the archeological group Ferigile, to identify the clues that would allow their detection and individualization. The Ferigile group evolved south of the Carpathians in the late stage of the Early Iron Age (the 7th-5th centuries BC). These communities, whose economy was based on livestock farming rather than cultivating the land…

Starting with late 2018, a new archaeological research project has been unfolding in the framework funded by the Romanian Governmental Unit for Research and Development (UEFISCDI) dedicated to top fundamental research, as one of the few winners of 2016 edition (the single to date) of ‘Complex Projects for Frontier Research’ competition. The Project, whose aims and methods will be shortly presented further, is entitled ‘Hidden Landscapes: Explorat…

  • A set of red deer canine imitations from the Iron Age necropolis at Valea Stânii (Argeş County, Romania)

Dragoș Măndescu, Mihai Constantinescu et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica Academiae…•2019

Red deer canine ornaments have been known since the Upper Paleolithic as symbolic markers of the status of the possessor. A recent discovery made at the Iron Age cremation necropolis of Valea Stânii (Romania) probably provides the latest prehistoric occurence of this type of personal ornament. This find was part of the grave goods in the burial in barrow no. 4, a double grave (an adult woman and a subadult individual of unidentified sex). Among t…
