  • Bisexual Women’s Experiences of Stigma and Verbal Sexual Coercion

    Open Access•Selime R Salim, A Alex McConnell et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Women Quarterly•2020•Cited by: 9•References: 11

In the current study, we examined how bisexual women’s unique experiences of sexual identity stigma might elevate their risk for verbal sexual coercion. Online survey data were collected from 350 self-identified bisexual women. Hayes PROCESS macro was used to test moderated-mediation and mediation analyses. Results indicated that anti-bisexual experiences (from both heterosexual and lesbian/gay individuals) were associated with greater internaliz…

  • Latent classes of childhood maltreatment, adult sexual assault, and revictimization in men

    Open Access•Ruby Charak, Lee R Eshelman et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Men & Masculinity•2018•Cited by: 2

Male sexual abuse has been associated with a number of maladaptive outcomes; however, there is a dearth of research on male revictimization, that is, experiences of victimization in both childhood and adulthood. The current study examined different patterns of victimization based on five types of childhood maltreatment and characteristics of adult sexual assault via latent class analysis. Further, the present study assessed differences across the…

  • Rape Disclosure and Depression Among Community Women

    Open Access•Prachi H Bhuptani, Julia S Kaufman et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 7

Many women who disclose a rape encounter victim-blaming responses, which are associated with negative outcomes. The present study examined rape-related shame and experiential avoidance as mediators of the relation between victim-blaming responses to rape disclosure and depression among 103 rape survivors drawn from a community sample. Results revealed that victim-blaming responses were positively associated with depressive symptoms through rape-r…

  • I Said No

    Open Access•Natalie K Cook, Terri L Messman-Moore et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2017•References: 21

The current study explored the impact of voicing non-consent in relation to rape. Out of 262 college women who experienced rape, 81% voiced non-consent. Voicing non-consent was related to verbal and physical resistance, but was distinct in prevalence and prediction of distress. Voicing non-consent was associated with trauma-related symptoms in multivariate models. Women who voiced non-consent were more likely to acknowledge their experience as ra…

    Terri L Messman-Moore, Terri L Messman‐Moore et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Health Behavior•2014

In college women, interventions which target emotion dysregulation may indirectly reduce alcohol consumption and alcohol-related problems via a decrease in coping drinking motives. Implications for future research will be discussed

  • The Impact of Sexual Enhancement Alcohol Expectancies and Risky Behavior on Alcohol-Involved Rape Among College Women

    Open Access•Terri L Messman-Moore, Terri L Messman‐Moore et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 5

A structural equation model examined sexual enhancement alcohol expectancies, heavy episodic drinking (HED), and risky sexual behavior as correlates of alcohol-involved rape in a sample of 353 college women. Prevalence of alcohol-involved rape was 15.6%. Sexual enhancement alcohol expectancies were indirectly associated with alcohol-involved rape via increased levels of HED, greater likelihood of sex while intoxicated, and number of sex partners.…

  • Sexual Victimization, Fear of Sexual Powerlessness, and Cognitive Emotion Dysregulation as Barriers to Sexual Assertiveness in College Women

    Open Access•Noga Zerubavel, Terri L Messman-Moore et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2013•Cited by: 7•References: 5

The current study examined sexual victimization and two barriers to young women's sexual assertiveness: fear of sexual powerlessness and cognitive emotion dysregulation. College women (N = 499) responded to surveys and indicated that fear of sexual powerlessness and, to a lesser extent, cognitive emotion dysregulation were barriers to sexual assertiveness. Compared with nonvictims, sexually victimized women had greater problems with sexual assert…

  • Emotion dysregulation and risky sexual behavior in revictimization

    Open Access•Terri L Messman-Moore, Terri L Messman‐Moore et al.•ARTICLE•Child Abuse & Neglect•2010

  • Severity of Child Sexual Abuse and Revictimization

Michelle A Fortier, David Dilillo et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Women Quarterly•2009

Child sexual abuse (CSA) has consistently been associated with the use of avoidant coping; these coping methods have been associated with increased trauma symptoms, which have, in turn, been linked to increased risk for adult sexual revictimization. Given these previous findings, the purpose of the current study was to test a model that conceptualized the relationships among these variables. Specifically, CSA severity was conceptualized as leadin…

  • Psychological Consequences of Sexual Victimization Resulting From Force, Incapacitation, or Verbal Coercion

    Open Access•Amy L Brown, Maria Testa et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2009•Cited by: 19•References: 8

Recently, incapacitated rape has emerged as a distinct type of sexual victimization. However, little is known about its longer-term psychological consequences. Two studies compare the psychological consequences of incapacitated rape to those of forcible rape and verbal coercion. Generally, the traumatic impact of incapacitated rape was intermediate to that of verbal coercion and forcible rape; however, there were domains (e.g., current perceived …

  • Risk Perception, Rape, and Sexual Revictimization

    Open Access•Terri L Messman-Moore, Terri L Messman‐Moore et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Women Quarterly•2006•Cited by: 20•References: 2

Risk perception was examined in relation to sexual victimization among 262 college women. Participants were presented with written vignettes that described hypothetical situations with a stranger and with an acquaintance. Participants' hypothetical decision to leave a potentially risky situation with an acquaintance predicted rape and revictimization during an 8-month follow-up period. Revictimized participants had significantly delayed responses…

    Open Access•Terri L Messman-Moore, Terri L Messman‐Moore et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Interpersonal Violence•2000

Research has suggested that child sexual abuse (CSA) may place a woman at greater risk for further abuse in adulthood, a phenomenon called revictimization. Revictimization may occur in the form of unwanted sexual contact, physical abuse, and psychological maltreatment. This study assessed CSA and adult sexual, physical, and psychological abuse with a sample of 633 college women. Survivors of CSA (CSAS) were more likely to report unwanted sexual i…
