  • Linked oppression

    Open Access•Ashley Allcorn, Shirley Matile Ogletree•ARTICLE•Feminism & Psychology•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 16

Ecofeminists and animal rights advocates have posited a connection between the oppression of women and the oppression of animals. Although male/female comparisons regarding attitudes toward animals have frequently been considered, only limited research has focused on gender roles and animal attitudes. We therefore examined the relation between gender roles and animal attitudes with undergraduate students (260 males, 484 females) at a public unive…

  • Praiseworthiness

Open Access•Shirley Matile Ogletree, Jennifer A Covington et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2013

Deterministic attitudes, information about a person's background, one's perceived similarity to a target person, and attributions of effort and ability may affect praiseworthiness. Two vignette studies with college student participants were conducted to consider this issue. Based on regression analyses, attributing achievement to effort was the strongest predictor of praiseworthiness across both studies. In addition, evidence for an augmenting ef…

  • A Double Standard in Death? Gender Differences in Obituaries

Open Access•Shirley Matile Ogletree, Daniella Peña et al.•ARTICLE•OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying•2005

Male/female differences in aging-related issues may extend beyond individuals' actual lives. Gender differences in 869 obituaries, death notices, and memorials were examined. Males, compared to females, had significantly more lines describing careers. Support was also found for a possible double standard in obituary pictures; while pictures were more likely to be included in male than female obituaries, the discrepancy between actual age and esti…

Open Access•Harvey J Ginsburg, Shirley Matile Ogletree et al.•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•2003

Young children's prosocial behaviors may be motivated by empathy. Forty-one 36–66 month-old children were actively involved with a pipe cleaner figurine play scenario. One figurine appeared distressed at an alarm sound. The other figurines simultaneously terminated the alarm, expressing either empathic or selfish motives. Twenty-four participants (58.5%) correctly pointed at the empathic and selfish figurines, and correctly restated their motives…

  • Female/male portrayals on U.S. postage stamps of the twentieth century

Shirley Matile Ogletree, Sara Merritt et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Research Reports•1994

Because of the possible impact of stamps on children as well as adults, we investigated the gender relevant content of U.S. postage stamps of the twentieth century. Males clearly outnumbered females in stamp representations, and the roles portrayed for both men and women were significantly more often traditional than nontraditional. The majority of people‐oriented stamps fell into the politics/military category. While males still outnumbered fema…

  • How Do I Love Thee?” Let Me Count the Valentines

    Open Access•Shirley Matile Ogletree•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•1993

Two studies are described in which attitudes and behaviors related to Valentine's Day were assessed. Participants completed a questionnaire on or near Valentine's Day 1990 (Study l) and 1991 (Study 2). Females and feminine individuals regardless of sex were significantly more likely than males and less feminine individuals to indicate that Valentine's Day was important to them, reported giving as well as receiving more valentines, and were also m…

  • Perceptions of Female/Male Presidential Candidates

Open Access•Shirley Matile Ogletree, Mary C Coffee et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Women Quarterly•1992•Cited by: 2•References: 3

A factor mediating attitudes toward female/male political candidates may be the potential effect of a candidate's private life. The impact of a familial situation on attitudes towards a hypothetical presidential candidate was investigated in Study 1. Although main effects for candidate sex and familial situation were found, our data did not support differential effects by candidate sex. In Study 2 the potential impact of a candidate's personal pr…
