  • Concurrent Validity of the Wisc-Iv in Eligibility Decisions for Students With Educable Mental Disabilities 1

    Concurrent validity of the WISC-III and WISC-IV was conducted using a sample of 35 students classified as educable mentally disabled. Full Scale IQ scores of previously administered WISC-III correlated .91 with WISC-IV Full Scale IQ scores when adjusted for restricted range. Of the previous eligibility decisions, 80% were confirmed by the WISC-IV scores. Implications of the findings and suggestions for research are discussed

  • Alcohol Use and Risky Sex among College Students

    Undergraduates, 55 men and 151 women, completed a 13-item survey about drinking behavior and sexual activity. In general, men and women were similar in their behaviors. Despite recent efforts to promote AIDS awareness, it appears that both genders may be engaging in risky behavior. The results are discussed in terms of educational efforts aimed at AIDS prevention

  • Concurrent Validity of the Culture-Free Self-Esteem Inventory and Physical Health in College Students

    55 college students received the Culture-free Self-esteem Inventory and a 13-item measure of physical health; significant Pearson correlations (generally in the .40s) were found on all but one subscale of the self-concept measure and the health measure. The results are in line with research using other measures of self-esteem and physical health and suggest that the self-esteem inventory may be useful as a research measure

  • Viewing Music-Videotapes before Taking a Test of Premarital Sexual Attitudes

    Three groups of students ( N = 151) were exposed to one of three conditions. Participants in two groups viewed either an Amy Grant or Madonna music videotape and completed an 18-item survey of sexual attitudes. A third group only received the survey. Chi-squared analysis identified many differences between the groups including gender differences in attitude.     After listening to 2 stories, William's Doll and Ira Sleeps Over, 2 groups of kindergarten students (22 boys and 27 girls) were questioned about their attitudes toward the nontraditional male roles depicted. A comparison with a 1975 study by Styer suggests that both genders are more accepting of literature portraying boys in nontraditional ways

    19 pairs of third grade children from intact and single-parent families matched for sex, intellectual ability, and academic achievement were administered a brief self-concept measure. Teachers and parents rated the students' self-concept on similar measures. There were no significant differences in scores between the groups; however, within each group the teachers and parents consistently overestimated students' self-esteem
