Volunteers’ Sense of (Dis)Connection at a Sport Event
This paper explores volunteers’ sense of (dis)connection and belonging at a major peripatetic sport event. Utilizing qualitative in-depth interviews with 31 volunteers at the Tall Ships race held in Sunderland in 2018, we sought to understand their lived experiences of this event 18 months after it was held. We argue that the Turnerian concepts of liminality and communitas, can be used to comprehend these lived experiences but require more critic…
Is the CVI an acceptable indicator of content validity? Appraisal and recommendations
Nurse researchers typically provide evidence of content validity for instruments by computing a content validity index (CVI), based on experts' ratings of item relevance. We compared the CVI to alternative indexes and concluded that the widely‐used CVI has advantages with regard to ease of computation, understandability, focus on agreement of relevance rather than agreement per se, focus on consensus rather than consistency, and provision of both…

Becoming "at Home" in Assisted Living Residences
Findings support a transactional interpretation of assisted living as home. The relationship between place attachment to one's community and full integration into assisted living is more complex than currently acknowledged
Asian-American Men's Acculturation and Gender-Role Conflict
There is limited research on Asian-Americans' acculturation and conflicts with contemporary gender roles. This research assessed three samples of Asian-American men's acculturation and gender-role conflict. Differences between Chinese-American, Japanese-American, and Korean-American men's acculturation and the four patterns of gender-role conflict were analyzed. The relationship of demographic and acculturation variables to gender-role conflict w…

High School Students' Perceived Self-Efficacy in Physical and Mental Health
Self-efficacy, a central construct of the Bandura social cognitive theory, formed the background for developing a measure of adolescent health expectations, the School Health Efficacy Questionnaire. The scale taps perceived self-efficacy in both physical and mental health. It showed strong factorial validity, although the factor structure is somewhat different for males and females. Subscales derived from the factor analyses gave high reliabiliti…
Development and Validation of the Computer Self-Efficacy Scale
A 32-item Computer Self-Efficacy Scale (CSE) was developed to measure perceptions of capability regarding specific computer-related knowledge and skills. Data from 414 individuals engaged in learning to use computers in three settings were used to conduct analyses for assessing the reliability and construct validity of the instrument. A principal factor analysis with oblique rotation produced a conceptually meaningful 3-factor solution with high …
What's Wrong with Three-Option Multiple Choice Items
Despite evidence supporting 3-option items, text authors and practitioners continue to advocate the use of four or five options. We designed an experiment to test further the efficacy of 3-option achievement items. Parallel tests of 3- and 5-option items were built and distributed randomly to college students. Results showed no differences in mean item difficulty, mean discrimination, or total test score, but a substantial reduction in time spent…
The Validity of the Measurement of Originality
To explore the construct validity of one of the originality scores of the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking, the investigators examined the responses of undergraduates to different instructions for the "Unusual Uses of a Cardboard Box" activity. One group obtained standard instructions, whereas another received vague instructions. After effects of fluency were partialled out, originality scores were substantially higher for the vague instructio…
Affective and Cognitive Correlates of Classroom Achievement
This study examined the relationship between cognitive and affective variables as predictors of classroom achievement. Final social studies grades were obtained and the Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal, Cooperative English Test, JIM Scale, and Gable-Roberts Attitude Toward School Subjects measures were administered to 431 eleventh grade students. Correlational and multiple regression procedures were employed. Significant relationships ( …
Achievement Prediction in Nursing Education with Cognitive, Attitudinal, and Divergent Thinking Variables
This research was designed to determine whether two attitude measures, designed specifically for prediction of achievement in nursing education, and a set of divergent thinking (DT) tests could increase the predictive efficiency of an established set of cognitive measures. Data were gathered from five schools of nursing. A set of cognitive predictor variables was used as the basic prediction battery. The following attitudinal and DT tests were us…
