Gender, Role, and Power
It seems possible that gender differences may often be reducible to differences in role. The authors sought to explore the effects of role and gender on hostile and anxious communications. Role was manipulated through the use of the Melian Dialogues, a technique borrowed from community organization training that asks participants alternately to assume roles of superior and inferior power. Fourteen groups of college students, each with a four-memb…
On Classifying Schizophrenics
sions which have been shown to possess meaningful behavioral correlates. At present three such dimensions have been extensively surveyed: paranoid-nonparanoid, a classification which can be made reliably on the basis of psychiatric interview; good-poor premorbid personality, expressed in terms of the Phillips Scale (1953) or the Kantor, Wallner, and Winder alternatives (1953); and chronicity, stated as the length of time since the initial diagnos…
Verbal Conditioning in Chronic Schizophrenia
A study was performed to investigate the conditionability of chronic schizophrenics and their differential responsiveness to verbal reward and punishment in a Taffel-type task. The effect of social responsiveness, as measured by a rating-scale device, was also assessed. Results indicated that those Ss remaining responsive to the social environment condition well under verbal reward. Variables inherent in the situation or E were related in a compl…
A Re-examination of the Hippuric Acid--Anxiety Relationship
Three measures of hippuric acid excretion were obtained from a sample of hospitalized neurotics following intravenous injections of sodium benzoate. Correlations between these measures and anxiety, estimated psychometrically and clinically, indicated the presence of a significant though moderate degree of relationship. In contrast to findings in earlier work, the amount of excretion was unaffected by age, weight, and body surface area
Responsiveness of chronic schizophrenics and normals to social and nonsocial feedback
