  • Towards optimal anticipatory action: Maximizing the effectiveness of agricultural early warning systems with operations research

Open Access•Djavan De Clercq, Lily Xu et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Disaster…•2025

  • Policy relevant crop diversity monitoring based on earth observation and farmers’ declarations

Open Access•Marijn van der Velde, Martin Claverie et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

Comprehensive, wall-to-wall, evaluation of cropping systems and therefore crop diversity using Earth Observation (EO) data is becoming reality. Agricultural policies such as the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in the European Union (EU) stimulate more diverse crop-mixes. We compute a new EU-wide overview of crop diversification for 2018 using the Shannon diversity index based on 10 m resolution EO crop map. For the EU as a whole, the effective n…

  • Pl@ntNet Crops: Merging citizen science observations and structured survey data to improve crop recognition for agri-food-environment applications

Open Access•Marijn van der Velde, Hervé Goëau et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

We present a new application to recognize 218 species of cultivated crops on geo-tagged photos, ‘Pl@ntNet Crops’. The application and underlying algorithms are developed using more than 750k photos voluntarily collected by Pl@ntNet users. The app is then enriched by data and photos coming from the European Union’s (EU) Land Use and Coverage Area frame Survey (LUCAS). During five tri-annual LUCAS campaigns from 2006 to 2018, 242 476 close-up ‘cove…

  • Extreme lows of wheat production in Brazil

Open Access•Rogério de Souza Nóia Júnior, Pierre Martre et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

Wheat production in Brazil is insufficient to meet domestic demand and falls drastically in response to adverse climate events. Multiple, agro-climate-specific regression models, quantifying regional production variability, were combined to estimate national production based on past climate, cropping area, trend-corrected yield, and national commodity prices. Projections with five CMIP6 climate change models suggest extremes of low wheat producti…

  • Time-varying impact of climate on maize and wheat yields in France since 1900

Open Access•Andrej Ceglar, Matteo Zampieri et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

Climate services that can anticipate crop yields can potentially increase the resilience of food security in the face of climate change. These services are based on our understanding of how crop yield anomalies are related to climate anomalies, yet the share of global crop yield variability explained directly by climate factors is largely variable between regions. In Europe, France has been a major crop producer since the beginning of the 20th Ce…

  • Mapping and modelling trade-offs and synergies between grazing intensity and ecosystem services in rangelands using global-scale datasets and models

    Open Access•Katalin Petz, Rob Alkemade et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 2

  • Climate extremes and the carbon cycle

Open Access•Markus Reichstein, Mona Bahn et al.•ARTICLE•Nature•2013

  • Reductions in soil surface albedo as a function of biochar application rate: Implications for global radiative forcing

    Open Access•Frank Verheijen, Frank G A Verheijen et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2013

Biochar can be defined as pyrolysed (charred) biomass produced for application to soils with the aim of mitigating global climate change while improving soil functions. Sustainable biochar application to soils has been estimated to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by 71-130 Pg CO2-Ce over 100 years, indicating an important potential to mitigate climate change. However, these estimates ignored changes in soil surface reflection by the applic…

  • Generating crop calendars with Web search data

Open Access•Marijn van der Velde, Linda See et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2012

This paper demonstrates the potential of using Web search volumes for generating crop specific planting and harvesting dates in the USA integrating climatic, social and technological factors affecting crop calendars. Using Google Insights for Search, clear peaks in volume occur at times of planting and harvest at the national level, which were used to derive corn specific planting and harvesting dates at a weekly resolution. Disaggregated to stat…

  • Assessing the impact of soil degradation on food production

Open Access•P S Bindraban, Marijn van der Velde et al.•ARTICLE•Current Opinion in Environmental…•2012•Cited by: 5•References: 3

  • Highlighting continued uncertainty in global land cover maps for the user community

Open Access•Steffen Fritz, Linda See et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2011

In the last 10 years a number of new global datasets have been created and new, more sophisticated algorithms have been designed to classify land cover. GlobCover and MODIS v.5 are the most recent global land cover products available, where GlobCover (300 m) has the finest spatial resolution of other comparable products such as MODIS v.5 (500 m) and GLC-2000 (1 km). This letter shows that the thematic accuracy in the cropland domain has decreased…
