  • Talking about “bioluminescence” and “puppies of the ocean”

    Open Access•Kimberly R Kelly, Claudine Maloles et al.•ARTICLE•Science Education•2024

Families commonly document their outings by capturing their experiences through digital photographs and videos. However, little is known about the ways in which families engage their personal mobile devices to document educational family outings and how they subsequently talk about the digital artifacts that captured their informal learning experiences. This paper presents new evidence on family digital artifact creation during an informal scienc…

  • But what about the beginning ?”

    Open Access•Kimberly R Kelly, Grace Ocular et al.•ARTICLE•Narrative Inquiry•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 7

This mixed model study first implemented a quantitative approach to investigate the structural coherence of the narratives that 3- to 6-year old children construct with and without their mothers. We then employed qualitative analysis to identify and categorize strategies that mothers used to scaffold their children’s developing sequencing skill during narrative conversations. Analysis of 233 co-constructed and 209 independent past-event narrative…

  • Narrative story stem methodologies

    Open Access•Kimberly R Kelly, Alison L Bailey•ARTICLE•Narrative Inquiry•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 10

We review three decades of literature across multiple disciplines that demonstrate the efficacy of narrative story stem methodologies (NSSM) to elicit responses that are projective of mental processes and to reveal what would otherwise be too complex or sensitive to communicate. The review synthesizes evidence for the extensive and diverse utility of NSSM. To accomplish this, we provide theoretical framing and historical background, describe asse…

  • Adult-child science language during informal science learning at an aquarium

Kimberly R Kelly, Grace Ocular et al.•ARTICLE•The Social Science Journal•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This pilot study explored whether and how adult science language was related to the science language that children used during informal science learning at an aquarium and tested a methodological approach to assess informal learning in biological science contexts. We observed and audio recorded children and their parents while exploring a live animal aquarium exhibit. Verbatim language transcripts were coded for science, technology, mathematics, …

  • Becoming independent storytellers

    Open Access•Kimberly R Kelly, Alison L Bailey•ARTICLE•First Language•2013

For parents to provide effective support for their children’s language development, they must be attuned to their child’s changing abilities. This study presents a theoretically driven strategy that addresses a methodological challenge present when tracking longitudinally the cessation or ‘fading’ of behaviors by capturing withdrawal of maternal assistance over time relative to change in child participation. Data are the co-constructed narratives…
