    The protagonist in Ernest Gaines' novel The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman is a former enslaved woman living in the fictional Louisiana city of Bayonne. Like most of Gaines' novels, the setting is suggestive of the author's childhood home in the Louisiana parish of Pointe Coupee.
