  • Comparative persuasive styles in Arabic and English: A study of the United Nations General Assembly Debate speeches

Salma Ghanem, Barbara Lynn Speicher et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of International and…•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 7

This study analyzed persuasive styles and tactics used in the United Nations General Assembly Debate speeches by Arabic and English speaking leaders. Past work has identified three persuasive styles: analogical, presentational, and quasilogical. The literature suggests that Arabs use analogical and presentational styles, while the “West” prefers the quasilogical style. Our results indicate that Arabs used the quasilogical style more often than En…

  • Critical Thoughts on Teaching Standard English

    Barbara Lynn Speicher, Jessica R Bielanski•ARTICLE•Curriculum Inquiry•2000•References: 9

This article exposes four assumptions that underlie most discussions of Standard English. First, spoken English equates to written English. Substantial evidence demonstrates that this equation is both misleading and false. Second, spoken and written English are equally amenable to standardization. This is also fallacious. We will use Prototype Theory (Rosch et al., 1976) and Standard Ideology (Milroy and Milroy, 1991) to explore how broadly share…

  • Simultaneous talk: Parallel talk among Filipino‐American students

    Barbara Lynn Speicher•ARTICLE•Journal of Multilingual and…•1993•References: 15

This paper explores the communicative behaviours of Filipino‐American students during two meetings of their student organisation. The group was extraordinarily cohesive and talkative, yet physically still, with few gestures and little movement while sitting. Their talkativeness surpassed notions of overlap or interruption (Sachs, Schegloff & Jefferson, 1974; Bennett, 1981; Tannen, 1990). Simultaneous or parallel talk prevailed. The analysis of on…

  • Some African-American perspectives on Black English vernacular

    Open Access•Barbara Lynn Speicher, Seane M Mcmahon•ARTICLE•Language in Society•1992•Cited by: 5•References: 14

Sixteen African Americans affiliated with a university participated in open-ended interviews exploring their experiential, attitudinal, and descriptive responses to Black English Vernacular (BEV). The fields of sociolinguistics and education report complex and contradictory attitudes and research findings regarding this code. In addition, media representations of BEV have been misleading. This article investigates how these sources have influence…
