Children and Parents Learning About Transgender Topics Through TikTok
This paper engages with the question of what childhood studies cares about, and how, in the context of children’s experiences with social media. Social media usage is on the rise among children, with 32% of children aged 7–9 using these apps. The study used a reparative versus affirmative framework based in queer theory to analyze 26 TikTok videos addressing transgender issues, with emphasis placed on analyzing the seven videos involving transgen…
Writing, Reading, Support, and Cheating
Long before ChatGPT, it was an open secret that students did not always read the books they were assigned in their English Language Arts (ELA) classes, relying instead on online study guides like SparkNotes. Via a retrospective survey, our exploratory study examined (1) the rate of SparkNotes use among high-school ELA students; (2) why students used SparkNotes, and what type of support they received; and (3) what feelings and attitudes informed t…
Sick at school
Longstanding impressions of children as innocent to human frailty, alongside the emphasis on efficiency and management in schools, play undeniable roles in the way teachers engage with children experiencing death and illness. This paper draws from a larger study of 116 written childhood memories from prospective teachers and practitioners enrolled across four universities in Canada and the United States and focuses on the 12 memories that specifi…
Childhood innocence and experience
This article examines how childhood innocence is taken up in (92) memories of undergraduate students across four sites in the US and Canada. Drawing from Foucault's theory of discourse, we examine how three themes—innocence as not knowing, innocence as being provided for, and loss of innocence as exposure to adversity—construct childhood as the absence of conflict, which perpetuates the myth of an innocence/experience binary and encourages a defi…
The Dreamwork of Childhood Memory
PEDAGOGICAL PRESENT traces of the past (Britzman, 2003) yet also telegraph dreams about how structures of schooling and society might be imagined otherwise. In teacher education, memories are often used in support of critical reflection. They provide the raw material for prospective teachers to contemplate both desirable and undesirable aspects of the teacher's role and to make observations about issues relating to classroom authority, values, and …
Childhood Memories of Playful Antics and Punishable Acts
This paper takes up the question of risk by examining childhood memories of nuisance-making and punishment shared by 26 participants enrolled in teacher education and/or childhood studies programs. Our analysis surfaces a tension that, on the one hand, idealizes the child as innocent instigator of playful antics and, on the other, produces a child who is guilty of punishable acts. We read these memories as an invitation to theorize a middle groun…

The undervaluing of early years educators reflects entrenched societal beliefs. We analyse representations of early years educators in 32 popular media texts through the lens of scholarship on care work and Bourdieu’s notion of symbolic capital, with the view that working conditions for educators and symbolic representations of educators reinforce one another. The majority of the texts present images that reinforce societal assumptions about the …

Challenging public perceptions of childcare teachers through Cixous’s écriture feminine
Cultural stories provide us with a repertoire of narratives through which we interpret and construct our understandings of the world, including our gendered understandings of the early childhood teacher. Through her notion of écriture feminine, Cixous [1976. “The Laugh of the Medusa.” Trans K. Cohen and P. Cohen. Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society 1 (4): 875–893] wrote of countering systems of cultural texts that inscribe women as ‘ot…
What is it like to be a child? Childhood subjectivity and teacher memories as heterotopia
Foucault's notion of heterotopia offers a novel way to understand teachers’ conceptualizations of childhood, in juxtaposing adult memories of childhood with their present context of teaching children. Memory writing prompts were given to 41 early childhood teachers, and the resulting written narratives were analyzed as heterotopic spaces. The study follows two trajectories. First, in terms of teacher development, we examine how the construct of h…
Coraline 's split mothers
Early childhood education and care is, again, a focus of debate in Quebec, Canada. Government-subsidized childcare programs are being cut and the province's plan to open prekindergartens for children in impoverished areas is being met with contention. Invariably, the focus of the debate is on the children's needs, the parents’ needs and society's needs. The educator is rarely mentioned. In this paper, I focus on the early childhood educator's sub…
