  • Beyond state absence - clientelised statehood in a Colombian conflict region

    Philipp Naucke•ARTICLE•History and Anthropology•2024

This article is an anthropological contribution to the historiography of the rural township of San José de Apartadó and the region of Urabá. The aim is to consider further concepts of statehood in Colombian conflict regions. Based on anthropological fieldwork and a critical rereading of historical literature, I reconstruct local and regional history from the perspective of the Urabá region and explore state action in the region’s many conflicts. …

  • "Dignified Life" in the Colombian Peace Process

    Open Access•Philipp Naucke•ARTICLE•Conflict and Society•2024

Security issues are at the heart of processes of peace-also in Colombia. The termination of hostilities and reintegration of combatants is aimed at increasing physical and public security in conflict regions. Peace measures such as land restitution and legalization are designed to reduce conflict causes and insecurity, notably in the rural areas. Based on ethnographic fieldwork, the article shows how the (in)security situation in the conflict are…

  • Introduction

    Open Access•Philipp Naucke, E Halbmayer•ARTICLE•Conflict and Society•2024•Cited by: 2

Starting from the ambivalence and contradiction of social categories at the margins, this introduction points out the potential of a perspective from and on the margins for a Critical Anthropology of Security. We conceptualize security from the margins as discourses and practices concerned with the social reproduction of marginalized actors, and security concepts and strategies used to negotiate, and establish notions of a "good life." Security f…

  • Peace and conflict resolution

  • Peacebuilding upside down? How a peace community in Colombia builds peace despite the state

    Open Access•Philipp Naucke•ARTICLE•Social Anthropology•2017

Critics explain the modest success of liberal peacebuilding with the neglect of local particularities. While the local is upgraded in concepts like , the role of the state and the direction of peace operations remain untouched. Following normative models of Western states, most peacebuilding practitioners and scholars assume that the state has an interest in peaceful public order, while local actors are deemed to have no potential for peace trans…

  • Peacebuilding and conceptualisations of the local

    Open Access•Birgit Bräuchler, Philipp Naucke•ARTICLE•Social Anthropology•2017

The frequent failure of international peace missions and the ‘crisis of the liberal peace’ led to the promotion of a local or cultural turn in peace research and work that focuses on the role and meaning of culture, local actors and a mostly unspecified ‘local’ for peacebuilding processes. This pushes peace and conflict studies to engage with the subject area of anthropological research, which poses a challenge for disciplines such as political a…

  • The Memory of Resistance

    Open Access•Philipp Naucke•ARTICLE•The Latin Americanist•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Peace Communities are a prominent example of the non-violent resistance practised by the rural population in the context of armed conflict in Colombia. Drawing on field research in the Peace Community of San José de Apartadó, this article uncovers the diverse aspects of remembrance and its impact on the agency of a peasant community strongly affected by the armed conflict. Highlighting the importance of historicity, it explains the socio-historic…

    Philipp Naucke, E Halbmayer•ARTICLE•Sociologus•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 6

    Open Access•Philipp Naucke, E Halbmayer•ARTICLE•Revista de Antropología Social•1970•Cited by: 2•References: 27
