  • Irony comprehension in first-degree relatives of patients with bipolar affective disorder – a preliminary fMRI study

Open Access•A Hajnal, András Sándor Hajnal et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

First-degree relatives of bipolar patients showed altered brain activity patterns during irony comprehension tasks, despite comparable behavioral performance. The observed neural patterns could indicate alternative cognitive strategies or latent vulnerability markers, underscoring the need for further multimodal investigation. Altered neural activation during irony processing may serve as an endophenotypic marker for bipolar disorder. Future rese…

  • Professional Support in Teaching Mathematics through Guided Discovery: The Role of Agency on Multiple Levels

Open Access•Péter Juhász, Réka Szász et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2024

The paper describes a case study of mentoring support provided to a novice mathematics teacher in using Guided Discovery in her classroom. The study used qualitative methods: thematic analysis of interviews and discussions. A central theme that emerged in the results was agency, and we observed that the high level of student and teacher agency in Guided Discovery results in the importance of teacher agency within and over the mentoring framework.…

  • Investigation of peripheral inflammatory biomarkers in association with suicide risk in major depressive disorder

Open Access•B Pethö, Márton Kovács et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2024

Suicide is the most severe complication of major depressive disorder (MDD). Novel research assumes the role of immunological dysregulation in the background - several studies have reported alterations in the number of inflammatory cells related to both MDD and suicidality. There are currently no objective, routinely measured parameters to indicate suicidal vulnerability. However, altered inflammatory cell numbers and ratios have been proposed as …

  • The effect of reading literary fiction on the theory of mind skills among persons with schizophrenia and normal controls

Open Access•Judit Fekete, Zsuzsanna Pótó et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

Prior reading experience is associated with better ToM performance not just in healthy controls but also in patients living with schizophrenia. Previous reading experience also improves comprehension, which in turn has a favorable impact on ToM. Our results support the idea that literary fiction reading may have a therapeutic potential in the rehabilitation of schizophrenia

  • Minor Physical Anomalies in Bipolar Disorder—A Meta-Analysis

    Open Access•Eszter Varga, A Hajnal et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Introduction: Minor physical anomalies (MPAs) may reflect basic neurobiological features underlying bipolar disorders (BPD), as they are sensitive physical indicators of morphogenetic failure of the brain. Despite several researches about the presence of MPAs in BPD, the results are still controversial. Objectives: The aim of the present meta-analysis was to assess the standardized weighted mean effect sizes of MPAs in BPD and to examine if MPAs …

  • Persons With Schizophrenia Misread Hemingway: A New Approach to Study Theory of Mind in Schizophrenia

Open Access•Judit Fekete, Zsuzsanna Pótó et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2020

Our results lined up with the original findings and we found SST to be a sensitive tool to explore the individual differences in ToM performance, not only among healthy subjects, but also among persons with schizophrenia especially in explicit mental state inferences without observing the ceiling effect. We found, however, SST to be less sensitive to measure spontaneous mental state reasoning and also the lack of the use of another ToM test to as…

  • Social Cognition Analyzer Application—A New Method for the Analysis of Social Cognition in Patients Diagnosed With Schizophrenia

Open Access•Eszter Varga, Róbert Herold et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2019

Introduction: Because of the importance of the assessment of social cognitive impairments in schizophrenia in clinical settings, a new computer application called SCAN (Social Cognition Analyzer applicatioN) was developed. Our first aim was to examine if patients diagnosed with schizophrenia could be differentiated from healthy individuals based on the results of SCAN, taking into consideration both response rates and response times. Our second a…

  • Community-Based Psychosocial Treatment Has an Impact on Social Processing and Functional Outcome in Schizophrenia

Open Access•Eszter Varga, Szilvia Endre et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2018

Schizophrenic patients have serious impairments in social cognition, which often persists after significant reduction in clinical symptoms. Community-based psychosocial treatments aim to recover social functioning for mentally ill individuals. Our aim was to examine prospective changes in social cognition and functional outcomes in two groups of schizophrenic patients involved in two forms of community-based psychosocial treatments namely case ma…

  • The processing of humour by individuals suffering from schizophrenia

Open Access•Eszter Varga, Róbert Herold et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Humour Research•2016•References: 6

Humour is an important component of social cognition. The last few years of cognitive research of schizophrenia provided a considerable amount of empirical evidence about social cognitive impairments in this serious neurodevelopmental disorder. The aim of this study is to investigate verbal humour comprehension and its cognitive background in a group of schizophrenic patients with normal intelligence. Results showed that patients were practically…

Open Access•Zsuzsanna Schnell, Eszter Varga et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Pragmatics•2016•References: 5
